Question -

My JD4600 (yr 2000) is having issues with the starter (I believe). It is intermittent in the cold weather but didn稚 happen when it was warm outside this fall. I replaced the battery as it had hit 5 years and checked all the connections, so I don稚 believe the battery is the issue.

When you turn the key, it grinds and you can hear it spin but not turn it. I then wait and it will usually start on the next turn. I will all JD to confirm, but I致e been told by several Tractor guys (who have A(s), B(s), and others) that the starter needs to be replaced as there are some teeth in there that are probably worn down.

Thoughts? They will replace it for me so I知 thinking that due to age and the symptoms that it is worth doing.

Thanks in advance, folks!

If you have a reputable starter shop nearby, they may be able to rebuild your starter. It sounds like it could be the bendix that is not properly engaging.

My guess would also be the Bendix. The Bendix may be repairable or you may have to purchase an entire Bendix. It is possible a complete new starter is not much more expensive - at least from a starter repair shop.

Thanks. I will be calling on Monday to get a price on a new one. My two tractor ‘heads are fired up about wanting to change it out for me.

I would do it myself, but I’m only good at the things the manual walks me through. :).

Thanks for your help!

Piles of good cheap starters on E-bay. The nice thing about changing a starter on "most" tractors is that it isn't a hellish job. Most important thing is take off your positive battery lead, or take it carefully off the starter and wrap it in tape immediately.

NOTHING nicer than a new starter motor after enduring problems with an old one!

I lived in Lakeville for many years.
I am sure there are several shops South of Minneapolis that will be happy to rebuild your starter.
Yours, as a rebuilt, may be better quality than an E-Bay import.

Sorry to hear you left Lakeville - it just keeps getting bigger and bigger.

I will be calling tomorrow to order one from JD. We’ll see how that goes.

Thanks!
