Tractor
looking for a BX
Hello all! It's been a while since I have been on this forum. Anyhow, getting ready to get a John Deere 4700 4WD with loader. I have narrowed down my search and the seller is scheduled bring the tractor by Tomorrow or Saturday depending on the weather.
Pictures look very good with 1200 hrs on the machine, and the seller seems to be honest as I can tell from out conversations.
The price has been negotiated to $12,300.( I will have the sherrif's dept run serial #)
Any suggestions/advice would be greatly appreciated!!

:welcome: to TBN! :thumbsup:For things to look at, I'd take it for a test drive. Operate it in all of the gears, Look for any signs of leaks or wear on the machine. Check the fluid levels including oil, tranny fluid, coolant, front axle fluid. Try all the levers on the machine, test the PTO, operate the FEL. With FEL use, try using the joystick in a diagonal pattern, this will both see how well it function while operating 4 of the hydraulic cylinders rather than 2. Engage the 4wd and turn in a tight circle, if the front wheels pull and leave marks on pavement/gravel than it is working properly. another way to test this is dump the bucket and have it push the front end of the tractor off the ground and drive in reverse. If the wheels turn while off the ground than the 4wd is working. See how easy it is to start, how long does it crank until it fires? Lift and lower the 3 point hitch, try putting weight on it to see how it lifts. Check the air filter for any packed in dirt or dust to insure it is running good. These are a few tips on things to look at when purchasing a used tractor. The price on that machine is acually really good, around here that same tractor runs for about $17000 used. 1200 hours is very low for that tarctor and it should serve you well for many yaers to come.

That's a fine little tractor.

Have a JD dealer run the serial number. If any service or warranty work was done the hours will be recorded. You will know what issues it had, if any.

I have one of these fine little tractors. Not much to add, just make sure everything works as it is supposed to and check for the obvious as mentioned earlier. That is a good price.

Thank you all for the advice! I went ahead and got the tractor and have had it about a week. Other than a few minor things, like squirrels have eaten part of the air filter, it is great. Feels good to be a JD owner.

Nice machine! Makes me want a tooth bar for my bucket. More likely mice than squirrels. Hope they did not chew any wires.

Great looking tractor. Like the toothbar. I have yet to install a FEL on my 4700. Still saving.
