make sure the bottom of the tractor is well protected as running over brush will tear things up (filters, hoses, hydraulic lines). Messicks recommends backing over big brush when mowing with a regular bush hog, but I wonder if people really do that
Been there, done that with my previous Kubota. I ran over some brush which broke a hydraulic tube that connected something in the front to the case. I lost about 5 gallons of hydraulic fluid on the ground and had to fix it in place.

I do a fair amount of that with my smallest tractor with hydro transmission. Works good. Not perfect as not sure that is a perfect way.

As to the JD or the Mahindra. Will not say Mahindra is not a good machine but my understanding they build a lot of 2 wheel tractors. One thing many tractor buyers never consider is what their need will be in say 10 years or so. Will your needs be more r less than now. Will the current tractor you are buying suit those needs that far in the future. In my opinion many first time tractor buyers really have no idea what they really will need, obvious by how many ask for advice on size here. Not being critical of anyone asking for advice on on size of tractor or such, not many years ago I was doing the same. In the 25 or so years I have owned a tractor went from a 43 hp to a 68 hp then bought a 27 ho for the "yard" and such work and last one is 91 hp. Now thinking need about a 43 hp as my tractor needs making another change. All I am saying there is the best we can do is think and plan but so often our needs change, we begin with 5 acres or 100 acres we just want to keep mowed. Then we decide want to add a garden or 20 acres of hay or a crop for animal feed. Why am i pointing all this out? You want a tractor that suits your needs the best you can as you see them today and expect them to be for the near future. However many if not most will in few year be considering bigger or smaller and that often involves selling or trading your current tractor. If you plan for the next purchase you will be very glad you did when it happens. Do some looking at prices of used tractors, some brands really hold their valve very well while others drop greatly.

Same is true when buy implements. Always buy quality with support.

Couple of things:...Anyone that was raised on a farm doesn't give "resale value" any thought whatsoever...if you need the tractor, the tractor will be with you forever...now as far as 100 acres and "size", it would seem logical/and practical to buy the biggest you can afford..BUT, as someone pointed out, once you've done this for a while you realize you will need something smaller, easier to maneuver, etc...what I call your "every day driver"...something in the 35 to 40 hp range with only rear wheel drive...leave the big one for big stuff, not pulling a 2 wheel trailer around to load trash...for me I've got a 6000 Mahindra for "big" stuff and a '67 135 Ferg. for the daily driver stuff, including grass cutting with a 6ft Land Pride finish mower...I'd say for the $4K you would save with the Mahindra, you could find a decent "daily driver" as well...I'm done now.. The resale talk is bogus its just a salesman's pitch more than anything. Now sell-ability might be something to look at, but that's different than re-sale. Reality is is when you figure out total price paid to include interest, maintenance, insurance etc, making your money back rarely really happens. Your resale margin might be higher for popular brands but you also pay more up front. Re-sale is really a non factor unless your the guy that buys and sells every other year.

Sizing a tractor to the need is very important (sort of obvious). My previous 30 HP 4wd Kubota was used on my last house/property which was 2.5 acres, it was a bit overkill but completely suitable for its intended purpose. I cleared the property, dug a couple of small ponds, helped friends, etc. Fast forward to our current 30 acres. The little Kubota was way too small, open operator station (I was tired of eating dust and pollen) and the loader had limited lift capability.

My large frame compact tractor (Deere 4720) 66 HP, ~50 PTO, hydro drive, 4wd, heat/AC, top and tilt, etc. is absolutely the perfect size for my property. I don't mow more than once or twice in a year but I do use the box blade and loader/forks/grapple/bale spear quite a bit (we are a working ranch.) The 5000 series and up Deere is just too large for my needs. My brother-in-law has a 500 acre ranch and he needs a tractor in the 80-100 hp range since he uses a bat wing mower (and mows quite a bit.)

As far as resale value, if it's not important to you - that's okay with me :drink: . Resale or residual value is always an important metric for me, we depreciate all of the equipment on income taxes.

depreication makes sense to keep track up business wise, it really does for anybody. Truthfully a piece of equipment that depreciates more is better for taxes anyways.

Hard to say. I owned a 35 hp yanmar just to do some small stuff around 13 acres I bought.
I then bought 40 acres. I thought a 50 hp tractor would do all I needed. so, I bought a 50 HP.
I'm now looking at a 90, or 105 hp tractor because I have had some task the 50 hp just can't perform

I think 70 Hp is the right size for what I want to accomplish at the moment. we shall see how I fill the smaller gap down the road as needed.
