just bought 55 acre hilly farm need a tractor and a 2003 john deere 5103 is coming up for auction has a 510 loader included has low hours. What is it worth? I don't think it is 4wd because front tires are not ag tires like rear they are groved. This rookie could use any advice

How many hours are on it? The 5103 is JD's economy line tractor that is designed to compete with the imports. The drivetrain is the same as you get in the much more expensive 5x20 series. For the money and if you want a 2wd tractor I feel it is an excellent value.

As far as price goes I believe the retail value is around $19k. When I was looking at them I could have gotten one for around $15k with a loader. I would think anything around $12k would be a very good deal if it had low hours.

Good luck.

Btw the one downside to the loader on that tractor is that it is NOT quick attach.

This rookie thanks you for the advice. I don't know the exact hours or if it is in fact 2wd but the pic shows basic tires on front and not ag tires like the back. The 4wd tractors I have seen have ag tires on front as well. It is up for auction and I won't be able to inspect until auction day. Supposedly it is in like new condition it was purchased last year. I was hoping to pick it up in the $8k range.

It is 2wd. The 03 series only comes in 2 wd. On a 2wd tractor it's standard practice to have the non-ag tires on the front as they serve no purpose for traction. It is also a non-synchro transmission. If you could buy that tractor for $8k that would be a complete steal. I can't imagine it would go that low. But who knows. I wouldn't be afraid of a 2wd loader tractor. You can always use the loader to get unstuck. I have a 4020 loader tractor that goes everywhere my 6415 loader tractor does. The only place it has trouble where the 6415 out performs it is in muddy conditions.

well then maybe I am dreaming at $8k. I am not sure what the secondary market is on tractors, apparently it is fairly strong on the resale side. This will be my first tractor and I liked the fact that it was so much newer than most used tractors I see up for sale in the papers. I don't want to spend $20k but I also hate buying things twice. It is just a 55 acre farm 8 of it woods. THanks again for all the advice

The used market is usually very strong on used tractors. They don't depreciate like used cars do. If I was you I wouldn't be afraid of going $10-12k on that tractor at all if it has less than 500 hours and the paint and all looks good.

There is a 10% buyers premium, so I will have to keep that in mind. There will probably be alot of bidders there since it is a small farm and the only tractor. Everything is selling, there is only a 5' cutter as far as implements for sale also selling seperately. I stopped at a kubota dealer yesterday the had a m4800 no loader and 2wd and it was $14,500 48 hp add a loader $5k add 4wd another $5k geez. That is the reason this particular jd appealed to me being newer. I don't want to buy problems and I don't know the first thing about tractors. I just know I need one. As soon as I take possesion of this land the cleanup begins starting with a good bush hogging.
