JD 5105
I was disking a field yesterday when my 2006 JD 5105 quit running. So far been able to determine the battery, starter & alternator are fine. There seems to be a short that blows the 30amp fuse to the key switch as soon as the key is turned on. Any ideas on where to start looking?

First suggestion: the problem is the thermistor sensor (thermistors are temperature variable resistors used as sensors.). On the thermostat housing there is a sensor that is connected to a two wire harness that goes to the injection pump; this is the "cold start advance" portion of the system so it starts easier when cold by advancing the timing.

When the sensor on the thermostat housing fails it shorts out and blows the fuse. Try unplugging it, replace fuse and see if it starts and runs. Check all the fuses. The part # is RE503242, if you are quick changing it, you don't have to drain the coolant, just make sure it's not hot at the time. You will want a pan under the tractor to catch the coolant, so as not too have to clean it up.

Second suggestion: the problem maybe in the starting system. I have attached what that looks like. To start here put the tractor in gear and see if it blows the fuse. If yes the problem maybe in the pto or neutral switch. If no, post back as will need to look at some of relays.

I have included a link to the operators manual.

I have a PDF of the Deere Tech manual you're more than welcome to. Shoot me your email if you want it

Gave this some more thought, the fact that your tractor just stop, leads me to believe that the fuel solenoid lost power. The thermistor sensor is plugged into the fuel solenoid and when it shorts out it kills power to the fuel solenoid. Must admit I would have thought the 20 amp fuel solenoid would have blown before the 30 amp switch fuse, but I would start by unplugging the sensor and replacing the fuse and checking the other fuses.

Same problem on my 2005 5103. It was exactly what JD5210 said it was. I unplugged the wires. Cheap part, not hard to replace.

Well, I unplugged the sensor and the tractor fired right up. Ordered a new sensor online as my dealer did not have one in stock. Thanks for the help JD5210. Saved me a bunch of $$ compared to what the dealer would have charged @ $65 per labor hour.

Joe, thanks again for the pdf copy of the manual.

Would it be safe to run the tractor for an hour or two of light work each day until I can install the new sensor?

Glad to hear that you got it running, still find it interesting that it blow the 30 amp and not the fuel solenoid fuse.

Running the tractor will not be a problem, as the cold start advance is used for start-up. Here is a short explanation of it.

To comply with the exhaust emissions regulation, the timing of injection pump should be around 6 to 9 degrees before TDC. These timing values do not allow proper start-up operations when engine is cold. To ease engine start-up, a cold advance system gives to the injection pump a temporary over-timing.

When coolant temperature is below 50 C (122 F), the solenoid valve is activated and opens the cold advance circuit.

Hmmm?
Ordered a new sensor online as my dealer did not have one in stock.

My dealer has parts for me the next day. It is something that Deere does, and it is great.
Had a ruptured steel hyd. oil line on my 4300 while plowing snow late in the day last winter, and identified the part #, and at 4 pm called my dealer. The the parts dept. said they would order it, and they called me at 11:30 am the following day to come pick up the part.
