JD 5105 will not operate in 4th gear high range

Hey guys, I'm new to the forum and have a big question. I have a John Deere 5105. When in low range, everything works fine. In high range gears 1-3 work fine. The only way to get it to work in 4th gear high range is to run full throttle in 3rd and shift into 4th but the rpms start dropping immediately. You can run like this down hill but that's it and it will only run at about 1500 rpms. I've noticed that when I push the clutch, it is like the brakes are being pressed, not enough to lock up the tires but enough to slow it down quick. I don't know if the two are related or not. Any ideas?

I would first determine if the brakes are dragging. The tractor may be too heavy to just see if it pushes in neutral. You may have to jack up one rear wheel at a time and see if the wheel spins freely.

I checked and sure enough the brakes are dragging. I called the John Deere place and the guy told me it sounded like a spring had come loose inside the brakes. After looking a more closely, I lengthened the rod connecting the brake pedal to the brakes. That freed up the brakes and now everything works great. I do not understand how the brakes would have changed but either way it's fixed!
