John Deere 5200
Hello,

New to the forum and recently purchased a used John Deere 5200 with a bucket, serial number LB5200E520577 and I am looking for some information on it. Yesterday I was using it and ran into an issue. I believe that I may have an issue with the fuel injector pump and need to do some repairs. What is the best option when it comes to service manuals for this? Are there downloadable versions or is John Deere the only option? Which manual is the correct one? I have looked and it seems that I need the TM1520 but I have also found these online with different years of manufacture. I think my tractor is a 1995 model. I have read somewhere that I will need to set the engine TDC before I pull the pump and want to make sure I am getting this right the first time.

Kind Regards

Welcome to TBN
John Deere tech manual will not have much info on the internal components of an inj pump. What's you tractor doing/not doing? Have you changed fuel filter lately & checked for good fuel flow from tank to IP? TM1520 is the correct manual for your tractor & I see no serial # or year model break. Printed version is $240. You need to do some good diagnostics before attempting to remove inj pump!!!!!!!!!

I totally agree that a quality diagnosis should be conducted. Tractor has been operating fine with fuel filter recently changed and I have good fuel flow. Problem occured when I was plowing a garden. Got to the end of the row and lowered the throttle down to idle as I back up to make my final pass. I got no response when I attempted to increase throttle, just stays at idle. As I conduct regular maintenance on it, checking normal things have already been done. I still pulled the filter again just to make sure as well as follow all linkage from throttle handle with no success of finding a failure. Must be something inside the pump, a spring or what not.

Will it start and run at an idle OK? If so, that would be very strong evidence that the problem is in the throttle linkage or governor linkage rather than in the injector pump itself. I think you are already there. And yes, I know how it is to suspect the worst - particularly on a machine that's new to you...but relax and have some faith here....

Pulling the injector pump is about the last thing I'd consider. For one thing, if it isn't in the throttle linkage to the pump or the governor, you are going to need that pump in operating condition on the tractor so that you can do the diagnostic tests. Most of those tests are done at the injector connectors.

As for manuals, one of the thing that JD really does well is their manuals. They do it so well that it can be hard to wade through all their offerings to find the right one.
On my old JD 530, I must have half a dozen different official manuals for it and there are others I don't have. The manuals I like best are FOS (Fundamentals of Service) booklets.
Not all JD models have the same multiple sets of manuals, so I don't know if the 5200 has the same FOS manuals available. But the FOS are sort of general in scope. What the JD FOS manuals do is take one particular mechanical system - like the hydraulics, or carbs, or fuel injection system - and explains why that system is designed the way it is and that gives the mechanic the basics that he needs to understand it. Then the workshop manual for each model goes into any particular tricks for your specific tractor.
I like hard copies, and generally find the parts manual more help than the workshop manual....but have both.
good luck,
rScotty

My guess is check valve(key 8) is clogged up which causes too much pressure inside of IP. Disconnect fuel return line remove valve then start engine to determine if it will accelerate.
