I have a JD 5205 and hydraulics just started acting up--affects loader, steering and rear lift...action is "jerky" and front loader will hardly raise. Rear lift "jumps and jerks" as it goes up. It acts like it is low on fluid, which I checked and it was a little low, but after adding fluid, it did not change--still very jerky operation. I turned wheels, thinking it may have air in system, but no affect. I have only had it six months--it is 2003 model and it has operated fine until today. Was mowing when it started after about 15 minutes of operation. I have not changed main filter or in case strainer. Any suggestions???

Turning wheels will not have any effect on the FEL or three point. The steering is a separate system although driven on the common shaft of the pump. Cycle the loader arms & 3 point fully several times to purge the air from the system.

How long since hyd filter was changed and sump screen(R139814) cleaned?

I would change the filter first, but also check the suction line(#3) for any damage and be sure clamps(#1&13) are tight. The suction line fits into the filter housing with an oring seal. If air can be sucked in anywhere in this suction line, you can get the symptoms you have.

Thanks fellas for suggestions. I have not changed filter yet, but I purchased one and will drain oil, clean oil strainer and change filter. Will also check suction line connections for cracks/damage or a poor connection that will suck air into the system. Just hope it is not the pump--I have a 450C loader with potential pump problems and those can be expensive.

I agree, since both sections (power steering and implements) are having the same problems it sounds like a good bet to be a suction line intraining air in the line.

This would be the first thing to check.

450C loader hydraulic cycles slow (both boom and bucket) and boom cylinder will not lift when bucket is full.

I would test the pump pressure with a 5000# guage to see how much pressure it can develop. The other thing to check is the pressure relief may be dumping the oil returning it to the base. The pump may well be worn out but I would make these checks to verify it first.

I'll add to what jenkinsph stated and it wouldn't hurt to change hyd filters and clean sump screen on the 450C if it hadn't be performed lately.

Follow up on JD 5205-dropped oil, changed external filter and removed and cleaned internal screen. The screen was all clogged up. It runs like a new one!! FEL functions are quicker...it totally fixed the problem. I did check suction line and connections first, but all were tight. Thanks for some excellent "over the shoulder" help.
As for 450C loader, I had planned to pressure test pump and system relief valve, but pump is real loose in housing, so I think that is problem. Will check rest out first because pump is $1600+ new. I hope it is not relief valve--it is drott (has 4/1 bucket) and it appears parts may be hard to get--either entire valve or repair parts. I was told by JD dealer that Ford (now NH) had purchased drott from Case and had parts, but that may have been bad info--local NH dealer does not seem to know anything about that...!! So, the saga continues...Thanks guys!!

If the pump shaft has play off axis then it is shot. How is the pump mounted? If it is via a coupling I would certainly consider an aftermarket pump for a whole lot less money. Same would be true for the valve with pr built in. I am a fan of Commercial Shearing pumps and motors and would suspect you can match one up very close to your pump. For an older piece of equipment I would look for a match at Surplus Hydraulics.
