JD 5300 not charging

First replaced battery then alternator.
When running the charging light flashes on & off every 20 seconds and still the battery isn't being charged.
Have checked all ground connections.
How do I check the relays? ohmn meter?
Any ideas? Cuz I out of them.

The service manual hasn't helped yet, still at a loss to why it's not charging.

You say the alternator has been replaced ... Check the voltage when the engine is running. Unless it's at least 14 volts, it's not charging.

The charging light flashes... Means the alternator is not charging when on. Is the flashing regular or variable ? A loose connection would be variable while a regular interval is some sort of protection circuit.... like a thermal cut out

The flashing is at regular intervals, about every 20 seconds constantly.
I'll check the voltage when running.

I wonder if the regulator might be separate from the alternator. If it is, they are prone to failure too, especially if there is high drain on the system like a hot wire arcing to frame or if exposed to very high heat. And, if it is an external regulator there should be a chart and instructions for proving its diodes.

Your alt has a internal regulator. Is it a new one? Whats the voltage at the battery when running? Make sure the alt is "grounded well".

It's from the early 90's, model? just a 5300.

Some points have already been stated, but here is what I do if my 5210 was having this problem. Test the battery with engine off should have at least 12 volts. Were the negative cable connects to the tractor take it off and make sure the bolt is clean and the hole into the frame is clean. Make use the belt is tight. Start the tractor and test the voltage at the battery should be between 14.2 and 14.8 volts. If not test it at the alternator for 14.2 and 14.8 test needs to be at output terminal. Look in the manual Joe sent you for charging system test points should show you which is the output terminal. There are also some other points in this section to test.

It alternator does not show the correct voltage, test the voltage with the alternator wiring at the output terminal disconnected. If it now shows the correct voltage, I would start ohm testing the wiring.

Look at the battery support hanger, i discovered that it was touching the cables on my 5303 & shortened the battery life on it, wife was cranking the tractor while i was looking at the battery, put the new battery in with a piece of inner tube to help keep it from contacting the cables.

All I found out is every time I hook up the battery cables something is drawing down the battery.
In 24hrs a fully charged new battery is pulled down to 8 volts, any ideas what will draw down the battery like that?

You might consider trying this suggestion. This is all done with the tractor off. Using a 12 volt test light (see video if you have not used one before) disconnect the negative cable on the battery and connect the test light to the negative battery pole and the tractor frame. If something is drawing power the light will be on. Then start one by one removing fuses, until the light goes out. If the light never goes out the problem is before you get to the fuse box.

If the light does go off, then put in all but the last fuse removed. Put the last fuse removed back in of what you think is the circuit drawing voltage, just to double check you results. I have attached a wiring diagram of 5X10 you need to determine if this close to your 5300.

If the circuit which you feel has the problem has a relay on you can pull out the relay and see if the light goes out.

Here is a video of what I am suggesting. He does it on the positive side of the battery, not sure it matters which side of the battery to use.

Some machines have a Blocking Diode on the charging circuit in the fuse box , Positrac have them to name one . It looks a bit like a fuse and it can only go in one way . If you are unaware , it is easy to pull it out thinking it is a fuse , look at it and then put it back in the wrong way around . If it is in backwards the battery WILL NOT charge and as it is in there to stop a reverse flow of current , the battery will run down via the alternator winding's .
