I have a JD 5310. I have the brakes dragging and the fluid boiling and losing brakes after running a few minutes. I have read several posts regarding the defective factory brake retractors and the brakes dragging in the 5000 series tractors being a common thing. I have also read where one guy paid JD Dealer to fix his and he had the same problem again. I am a skilled mechanic and prepared to fix this item. I have one question. What is the consensus on what to do with the brake retractors upon repair? Do I perform the repair and leave out the brake retractors or has JD developed an improved brake retractor pin that eliminates this problem? Thanks for any suggestions.

Thanks JD 5210. I have a detailed repair manual. I have reviewed that you tube video. I replied to his video a month ago asking what he found but he did not reply and as you said he did not post a follow up video. But he did indicate he had a dealer replace the retractors and the brakes dragged again after use.

I am getting ready to perform the repair over the next two weeks. I was just wondering if anyone had any more information on the brake retractors and whether to reuse or delete them from the repair. Thanks.

Wondered if you had any late info. I am getting ready to work on my tractor.

I discarded the retractors and replaced the brake disc. No problem now

My thoughts are JD utility tractors had no brake disk retractors springs from '64-'92 then brake retractor springs were added I think in hopes of lowering GPH fuel usage. I've read several instances where brake disk retraction springs have be removed with good results
