2001 JD 5310 w/ 542 FEL
I have a 2001 JD 5310, 2wd with FEL. This is my first tractor and just wanted to ask a few basic questions. I picked up a 55 Athens 7ft harrow earlier this week. What gear do most of y誕ll use to pull a harrow And where do i need to stay on the tachometer? I was pulling it in B3 and C1 today with ease. I Know it depends alot on dirt. Most of our dirt is sandy. I just want to make sure that it is ok to run the harrow in those gears. The harrow is a heavier duty type harrow.

Do what feels comfortable and not lugging down the engine. From what you say, you are not lugging the engine when you say "pulling it with ease".

So seems to boil down to speed, and you can judge that by how far it is throwing dirt and if the ground you are plowing up is looking like what you want.

Fuel usage may be higher if lugging the engine in the higher gear, and if the lower gear is giving you the tillage that you want.. is what I'd do.

This for food plots?

That is correct, for food plots. Prior owner told me he used A3 or B1. I tried it at that but just didnt feel right and the dirt was not getting broken up very fine and i was moving at a crawl. It was in large chunks and not getting as deep. I am also curious at what speed i need to go. There is a marker on the tach for bush hogging, but i dont think there is one for discing??

Nothing on the disc running off of the PTO, which is why the suggestion on the tach for brush hogging.

You just find the speed that does the job for you, not going to find a formula for speed that you "need" to go. If one pass doesn't do the trick, then make another pass.
Faster just throws more dirt, slower may go deeper, but deeper may also require more weight on the disc..

A pic or two showing results, or even a short video would help giving you suggestions to get it the way you want it to perform.

At what angle do you have the disc set at for discing up your food plot ground?

Put up some good pics so we can help you.
