I bought a used John Deere 5400 a year ago. It has 3 sets of hydraulic fittings on the back, labeled I, II, and III. All are connected on the back side, but there is one additional hose coming from the area of the valves and connected to another hose going back under the valves...the connection is held up with a rubber snubber on the back (kind of weird, but not sure what it is). I had the dealer install a new loader, connected to scv's I and II, and runs off the joystick...works great.
I just upgraded to a bale spear with a grapple, and ran hoses back to scv III, but it appears to only work in one direction. I went through the hoses and ram, and everything after the scv is fine. The lever inside the cab is all the way "back", and if you push it forward, it engages the hydraulic and extends the ram, but pull it back and nothing. I switch the hoses, push the lever, and the ram retracts, but again, nothing the other way.
Looked through the manual, and it shows everything working both ways. The graphics at the scv show a picture of the ram with an arrow out at the top fitting, and the ram with an arrow in at the bottom fitting.
I know I'm slow, but it looks to me like everything is supposed to work bi-directionally. The dealer (in another town) apparently believed it was bi-directional also, told me I could run the baler off the third scv and tried to sell me a bucket with a grapple.
Is there a different type of valve that could have been installed that only works one way? Is there possibly a simple plumbing fix that would convert this back to two way operation? If I buy the manual for the third scv, would it show how to convert the valve back to two way operation? I'm considering purchasing one of the electrical splitters to use on one of the working scvs to operate the grapple, but would rather fix the third scv if it isn't too tough.
