We have A John Deere 5603 and upon checking the oil this past Friday found it to be 4 1/2 qts low. Filled it, blamed the operator for not checking the oil and sent it out . A couple hours later it was running hot. found oil in the cooling system. I suspect maybe engine oil cooler seals leaking but haven't made it to that part of my research. Any one have any thoughts or experienced this ?

About 30 years ago we had a Massey Fergerson tractor with a Perkins V-8 engine. We were having the same problem with getting oil in the water.

It turned out to be warped heads. We had to remove the heads and get them shaved. Then it happened again and we ended up changing the heads.

Hope this is not your problem, but it's something to consider.

You have a cylinder head problem.
You could try re torquing it when hot but I think at a minimum you are going to need a new head gasket and the head should be checked by a machine shop.
Rad will need professional cleaning to get the oil out.

This.

The bad part is it will only get worse, and more expensive, if you don't do something about it now. Hopefully it's just a failed head gasket and the head hasn't warped yet, but there's only one way to know.

I agree that engine oil cooler is the place to start diagnostics.

I haven't found in the manual that it has an engine oil cooler, only hydraulic oil cooler and that's external in front of the radiator. I have A feeling the heads coming off !

My neighbors 5603 had a leaking engine oil cooler. They resemble this parts photo.

Update, removed the cooler and took it to our local radiator shop. Held 50 lbs. with no leaks. Didn't want that outcome ! I guess its head time !
