Rotary Cutter JD 609 Rotary Cutter Rear Wheel Rubbing

I recently installed front and rear solid shields and chains on my JD609 rotary cutter. Apparently the JD609 rear wheel assembly had two configurations: you could either have a shortened tailwheel frame assembly, or the longer frame assembly. (short = approx. 35", long = 46") I have the short version of these bolt on tail wheel assembly's. The tailwheel now cannot swing freely, due to interferance with newly installed safety chain assembly. (I should have picture next week) I am looking for advice from anyone that may have experienced this, and corrected by modifying. Dealer has stated they have seen users that will remove the chain guard assembly enough to allow wheel to rotate freely.

I would fabricate/weld up and extend the tail wheel assembly far enough back to resolve the problem. If you don't have the welding equipment or skills to do this have a local welding shop make the necessary changes for you. I would wan't the guards to work as intended and would not wan't a gaping whole large enough for the rear rail wheel swing.

Thanks for the tip. I had a feeling this would be the way to go, but wanted to check for other possibilities. My neighbor has welding experience, hardware, tools. Any suggestions on the method to extend the tail-wheel assembly? My thought: cut the tail wheel arm and extend.

Should be able to extend the tailwheel arm as you mentioned, just make sure the short arm version is heavy enough. If it has box tubing with a heavy wall you should be okay.
