Hello:
I have a 2014 JD 6105D with 830 hours that started having the Service ALERT indicator on at approx. 500 hours. I changed the water sensor but this did not fix the problem. The tractor runs fine otherwise. More recently, the ENGINE STOP indicator came on. The Service ALERT or ENGINE STOP indicators come on after running the tractor for approx. 5 minutes. The manual lists the following possible issues:

1. Low engine oil pressure
2. High hydraulic oil temperature (PowrReverser/Wet Clutch Tractors)
3. High coolant temperature
4. Rear PTO switch on and operator out of seat
5. Water in fuel
6. High manifold air temperature

The engine temperature is okay, so I would guess 3 and 6 are not the cause. I neither use the PTO nor leave the operator seat, so I would guess 4 is not the cause. I drained the fuel and there is not water, so 5 might not be the issue.

I am left with options 1 and 2, unless I am missing something else.

My guess is that a sensor went bad but I do not know which one.

I was told I should (1) unplug each sensor before starting, (2) measure their resistance to identify whether they are normally open or normally closed, (3) plug them back and let the engine run for a while and then (4) test the sensors again. I would like to do this, but I am not sure where the oil pressure sensor and the hydraulic oil temperature sensor are.

My second question is: what triggers the change from a Service ALERT to an ENGINE STOP.

I would appreciate any help with these questions.

Thank you,
Paul

There are many things that can cause the warning lights to come on. Usually the difference between service alert and Stop engine is the "severity" of the fault. If oil pressure is low a service alert is lit. If oil pressure is nonexistent, stop engine light will come on. DO you have power reverser transmission? Transmission faults can cause stop engine lights as well. Clogged filters, pressures low, high temps, etc. When light comes on, does power decrease? The next time light comes on, press the "roll mode switch". It is the rocker switch on the dash with the circular arrows. Hold rocker switch down for 5 seconds and error code should be displayed. Write it down and post it here. I will let you know what it means.

Thank you for your suggestion!!! I really hope I can fix this because I started cutting hay and cannot finish unless the tractor is working again.

I went and did what you told me and here are the codes. Meanwhile, I looked in the Diagnostic Technical Manual and found some explanation of the codes.

Engine Control Unit:

ECU PR 97.03 - water-in-fuel signal out of range high (I probably caused this when I disconnected the sensor trying to identify the service alert and stop engine)
ECU PA 100.04 - engine oil pressure signal out of range low (I probably caused this when I disconnected the sensor trying to identify the service alert and stop engine)
ECU A 101.00 - crankcase pressure high. Engine power limited. Check blow-by filter
Interestingly, this code was not in my manual. I did find it on line. I am not aware of a blow-by filter on the 6105D - if there is one, I never changed it - so this might be a problem.
ECU PA 101.16 - crankcase pressure high. Check blow-by filter. Same comment as above: code not in the 6105D manual
ECU A 1569.31 - engine power derate condition exists

Power Train Reverser:

Ptr PA 70.14 - Park brake engaged during movement
Ptr PA 523959.31 - No wheel speed while in gear

After discovering these issues, I have the following question:

1. How can I erase these codes? I ask this because I assume they are no longer pertinent. Trying to identify why I get the service alert and stop engine warnings I disconnected the sensor to water-in-fuel and the sensor to engine oil pressure to see which one is the culprit. Now they are connected back.

2. What is the meaning of "PR", "PA" and "A" in front of the numbers?

3. Is there a blow-by filter on a 2014 6105D?

Thank you,
Paul

Yes you have a blow by filter. It is in a black plastic housing on right side of engine. There are 2 different ones depending on what emissions package you have. The "PA" stands for Previously active code and "A" is for Active code. Looks like the blow by filter is causing your current problem. Here are steps to clear codes:
Recall, Record, and Clear Codes Using On-Board Diagnostics
Action:
1)Place key switch in RUN position (engine OFF).
2)Stored Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTC) appear on Instrument Cluster Control (ICC) screen. If codes appear, record the information as the displays scrolls through the stored codes list.
3)Press and hold Roll Mode Switch for 5 seconds to display first control unit screen.
4)Upon entering diagnostics, any active or previously active codes will automatically appear in a scrolling fashion. To view and/or clear fault codes for any given TLA, you must do the following
5)Use Turn Signal Switch to scroll and select CCU, ECU, EIC, ICC or PTR.
6)Press and release the Roll Mode Switch to enter CCU, ECU, EIC, ICC or PTR address space.
7)Use the Right Turn Signal Switch to scroll to diagnostic address 001 for that desired control unit.
8)If codes are present the word “codes” will appear. If not, the word “none” will appear.
9)Press and release the Roll Mode Switch to view all codes details for this control unit.
10)Any codes present in that control unit will appear there in scrolling fashion for multiple codes.
11)To access the option for clearing codes for this selected control unit, press and release the Right Turn Signal Switch.
12)The question “CLR ?” will appear.
13)To clear the codes, press and release the Roll Mode Switch.
14)To go back to the entire control unit list, press and release the Left Turn Signal Switch.
15)Proceed to the next desired control unit by repeating steps 5—14.

You need to be careful when doing this procedure. If not done properly, some settings in controllers can be changed and cause operational problems. If you don't feel comfortable doing it, just leave the codes in there. Stored codes don't hurt anything other than making it more difficult to decide which codes might be causing a problem in the future.

Good grief you need to be a computer junkie to suss all that out... Sure am glad my tractors are pre-tier 4.

Thank you! I appreciate your detailed instructions.

I got my filter and tried to install it. Unfortunately the bracket that holds the black plastic housing has two bolts, one of which I could not remove even when using a flex extension. It seems the exhaust pipe needs to be removed to get to that bolt. I will start a new thread asking questions on removing this exhaust pipe. I am not sure whether a heat shield and a clamp should be removed or not.

Thank you again,
Paul
