I've got 2 of the 640 hay rakes- one that I use, and one for parts. I am looking for a better way to rebuild the rolabar knuckles. I've got one that's frozen, so I want to rebuild it, and id like to have an extra on hand. All of the ones on my spare rake, I wouldn't trust swapping out. They would go out too... But at the dealership, it was right at $80 to buy all of the parts individually (bearings, seal, and the shaft). Is there any type of kit that I can get to rebuild this thing? I don't mind aftermarket...

Thanks, TXJim.

The threads are all rusted pretty bad. I soaked them in oil yesterday, hoping to free the nut. Of the two that I got off so far, one of them just needs bearings. But the threads are stripped on the other, so I'm thinking about getting a die and re-tapping it a size smaller. At least I would be able to afford it that way!

Right now, both rakes have 4 bars. While I'm doing all of this, is it worth it to add the 5th bar?

I am not familiar with the detail on that rake but in general standard bearings are cheap - certainly should not be $46 - I am thinking more like $15 for a light duty non-precision application like this. I would be real surprised if you could not find an off the shelf sealed bearing for this application from a place like Motion Industries or Fastenal. i f you know the OD, ID and thickness of the bearing races they can match the bearing. AS Tx Jim says the shaft should be reusable even if galled as long as the bearing fits snugly. If the bearing is a little loose you can roughen the shaft a little because what is important is that the bearing fits snugly on the shaft and is perpendicular to the shaft for proper movement. As long as the bearing is does the rotation and there is no movement between the faces and the mounting hardware you should be OK.

TxJim,
Do you still work for JD? I'm trying to get a price on a ROPS for a 3020. I think it's part # AR51416 but the local dealer said that they don't have it...

No I haven't worked for a JD dealer since '87. But my dealer shows this price. AR51416 ROPS - ROPS, ROPS W/SEAT BELT (NO HI-CROP) ADD 805.00 USD so it still should be available.
