JD 6405
Hello everyone. I have a 2001 JD 6405. Has a lot of hours, about 12k, but still runs strong. It started running hot. I've replaced the radiator and hoses and coolant resivor and thermostat. Now, it does not run hot, just hotter than normal. The temp guage used to run in the middle, now reads much closer to the red section, but still in the green. I checked the thermostat to make sure it is the same as the one I took out and it is, 78*C. It has plenty of fluids. I'm at a loss as to why it is running hotter. Could it be air locked? If so, is there a bleeder valve to let out excess air?

Any suggestions are appreciated.

Water pump? Does it have fan clutch? Never had problem with either on a tractor, but both on autos in the past causing the to run hot. I'm no expert, but you have some on here that will most likely help you solve the problem. Good luck with it.

I don't believe it has a fan clutch. No leaking at the water pump, so I assume it's good. I'm no expert either, a novice really. I hope an expert on here can point me in the right direction.

I have also had a bad radiator cap. The temp hand was running higher than normal. The spring under the cap was broken. The spring would move but was not strong like it should be. Got a new cap and it worked perfect. I read a feed that says some chrysler cars have plastic impellers inside the pump that can break and they don't leak like you expect. That is what I had, but probably not your problem. My cars have many miles on them so I have replaced about everything at some point. Why I said the fan clutch, is I had one go bad. Never heard of anyone ever having one bad before except me.

Viscous drive fan was an option on 6405. See if fan will turn by hand while engine isn't running?

I can turn it, barely, but the belt turns too. I also have an 04 JD 6715. I can easily turn it without the belt turning. So I think the 6405 does not have a an clutch and the 6715 does.

Check the coolant temprature and see if the guage agrees, if not either the sender or guage , or wiring is giving a false reading.

blow out or hose debris in radiator fins....have you checked? working sedge grass in bloom can play havoc

if the belt wasn't loose and water pump has never been change I vote for water pump. dealer can rebuild it
