JD 6430 Premium SCV issues

Hello, we are having trouble with the SCV's on a 6430 Premium. I believe it is a 2007 model. IVT transmission.

The tractor is hooked up to a mixer wagon and is used daily. It is left outside and the temps lately have averaged around -20F at night.

The SCV's fail to function if the temps are below zero and I have to hit the solenoids with a heat gun before they will work. Is this normal for this fancy 'new' stuff?

The hoses also repeatedly pop off. You go to use the number 3 SCV and both it and say the number 1 SCV hoses pop loose.

Obviously this is quite frustrating.

We have the cold weather block heater and some sort of hydraulic heater but the hydraulic heater doesn't seem to help much.

Any ideas?

I should add that JD just replaced the couplers on the tractor and I replaced the male fittings on the wagon. Still pops off.

The brand new jumper hose also pops off.

I have the hoses pop out sometimes on the 6200. Two of the SCVs have been replaced. One new one was bad from the dealer. There were a gizillion updates for that SCV part number which kind of tells me something. I had all kinds of trouble with the cables freezing up. That is the weak link. Not sure if your tractor has cable operated SCVs.

No expert on SCVs but I, like you, can figure out they don’t like the cold temps. I assume your fluid is too thick to properly flow at that temp. Take a quart of the fluid you use and put it with the machine overnight. See how it flows in the morning. You may find a different fluid that will flow at that temp. Also confirming you don’t have any water in your fluid?

IT, this machine has electronic controlled valves. Brand new battery and the volt meter show 14.2 so it shouldn't be an electrical issue.

Our 7510 and 7610 work everyday with zero issues but of course they don't have this fancy new crap.......

RN, I want to change the fluid and see if that helps. Not sure what is in it now. We bought the tractor about a year ago and had zero issues in the 'warm' weather. This past month has been a frustrating time.

It's my beef with JD. It's almost as if they don't test their wonderful designs in the "REAL" world, OR have to pay for that stuff when it breaks. You buy that stuff and are totally at the mercy of the manufacturer. And often, good luck with that. I have Menonnites close by, (Martins Farm Service) that deal in JD stuff and know it inside and out, unlike the factory trained mechanics at the dealership.

Not the same as hydraulic fluid but this will give you an idea of the difference can be had between different fluids.

You can also drain a quart of your hydraulic fluid and see what it looks like the next morning. Since it’s coming off the bottom it may not show any water even if that’s an issue.

I’d call a local heavy equipment parts or repair shop and see what they use for THF in your area. With those temps you are not the only one who has had issues. I know the dealer may be good but if it’s already got JD fluid in it that may not be the best source.

This video shows the potential difference in fluids. Even though it’s engine oil you get the idea. You can skip the white board stuff at the beginning if all you want to see is the flow test.
