I had posted this in a different forum, but it was suggested that I move the post over here since it's more likely I'll find additional 650 owners. As an update to below, I did get confirmation that turning the key to the left gets the glowplugs going. Any help or advice is greatly appreciated, I'll be in an tough spot for a while, so I hope you guys are patient with what is likely going to be some basic questions.

Here's my original post:
I found this website and it seems very helpful, so I'm hoping I can get some basic help considering the situation I'm in. My sister was recently widowed, very shockingly because her husband was only 45 (heart attack). The problem is that they lived on 15 acres of property of which my brother-in-law religiously mowed the back 13 acres every other weekend with his JD650 (about 20 years old). Now it's the first week in May, and the property is real close to needing a mowing. I went there last week to see if I could start the tractor because realistically my sister can't do it, and I'll have to figure out how to start the JD, and then second problem is going to be the proper levers to engage the PTO to start the mower. I'm hoping someone can at least point me in the right direction as far as getting it started. It turns over fine, it has diesel fuel in it, and my estimate is that it was last used in November (my brother in law died in December). I think I read in one of the posts that you have to turn the key to the left to get the glowplugs to heat up the fuel. I had not tried that last week, so I'm hoping someone can either confirm that or offer other suggestions.

As some background, I was a diesel mechanic about 25 years ago before I decided to pack in that career and go off to college, so a lot of things have changed in those 25 years, and truthfully I just don't have enough of a recollection that is useful.

It's a real bad situation, and it really made me realize last week that it's amazing when someone passes away, all that great information they had in their head which was always a great resource is now completely unavailable. He was a great guy, and he maintained his tractor well, I'm just hoping I can continue some of his good work. Thanks for any help.

Striker,

The 650 is a great little tractor, my Dad has had one since 1982 I think.

To start it, just push the throttle forward out of idle-cutoff, and crank the engine. You'll have to have the gear selector in Neutral since the 650 has a neutral safety switch. It should be warm enough these days not to need preheating. But, if it's a little tired and won't start without preheat, then just push the throttle full forward, hold the key to the left, and if it's very quiet where you have the tractor stored, you'll hear a little *POOF* sound come from under the hood after about 20 seconds of preheating... that's the small bit of fuel igniting in the intake manifold. As soon as you hear this, IMMEDIATELY crank the engine until it starts, it should fire off and be running on it's own in a few revolutions. After it starts, pull the throttle back to keep the rpm's around 1200-1500, and let it warm up for a bit. If you can't hear the *POOF* (it's very faint), then preheat for about 30 seconds, then crank.

The PTO lever is on the LH side along the fender. Up is disengaged, down is engaged. You'll have to step on the clutch and stop the tractor to engage the PTO, it's transmission driven.

If you have the JD belly mower, the switch for the front PTO is a toggle switch on the right side of the instrument panel. Just lift and push forward on the switch to turn it on.

Hope this helps you get things going!
