JD 650 Smoking and won't run

My 1986 JD 650 will not reliably start. On the rare occasion it will, it blows thick white smoke for a while, then it appears to run normally and suddenly stops running without explanation. I don't know much about 3-cylinder diesel engines, but I think I have some kind of fuel problem, perhaps a bad injector. Fuel is new and I replaced the fuel filter. Please help.

Are you certain there is no water in the fuel? Did air get in the injector lines when you changed the fuel filter? I would put in a water displacing fuel additive and bleed the injector lines.

MAKE SURE u have fuel AT the inj. pump INLET.. open the bleeder & watch the fuel POUR out.. then close it.
Loosen the steel line AT THE INJECTORS & crank the engine.. wait till fuel squirts out & tighten..
DONT burn up your starter.. crank for a 10 count & stop & give it a rest & do it again till fuel squirts out..
IF it doesn't/never squirts out.. THEN u have a problem.. Cuz if u have fuel going IN & none out.. then u have inj. pump problems.. OR a shut off problem.{cable or electric}
MAKE SURE the throttle is in the wide open position.!!

Check your fuel pump on the side of the engine. My F1145 front mower was doing the same thing. Its a 28 hp JD front mower w a Yanmar motor. Unhook the fuel line coming from the fuel pump at the filter and see if when you crank over the motor if you get any fuel. If not , thats your problem.
