JD 660 Tiller

I saw a JD 660 tiller in the paper for $1300. Now, I haven't seen it or even talked to the guy yet, but I've got some ?'s ...

Here's what I've found out so far:
-60" tilling width
-18" cutting circle
-6 blade rotor
-36 blades total
-8" depth
-adjustable slip clutch
-skid shoe depth control
-633 lbs

Does anyone know the years they manufactured this model?

How do they compare to the highly respected brands like Kuhn and Howard (I read in an old post that they were made by Howard-true?)

What do you think bout the price-not knowing condition, etc.
-I saw 3 on machinefinder.com for $1650, $2650, $1595

I'd love some input, I think it would look nice behind my 4310.

I used to rent that same tiller and it worked great behind my 4300. Went to deal on it this winter, but learned someone beat me to it. It was worn (teeth needed replacing) but it still brought $1000, I was told. I would have tried to deal on it 'with' new teeth, but didn't get the chance.
If the teeth are in good to fairly good condition, I would pay the $1300 for it in a heartbeat.

That tiller looks good and even appears it will fit the iMatch or SpeeCo quick tach.
Any outlet in WI or know the shipping cost to here?

I have the John Deere 660 tiller....it is a well made tiller they are made by Howard.If the tiller is in good shape that is a good price because John Deere charges a lot more than that for them new.

Sounds like a good price if the tines are not bent and everything else looks good. I just paid $1400 for a nice used 550, and worth every penny...MM

The JD550 & 660 tiller (Howard) models have been discontinued. The primary supplier now is Sicma for John Deere and Maschio for the Frontier tillers.

They are still a good tiller and parts are available for them...the JD 4000 series are discontinued as well.If the tiller is in good shape it would not keep me from buying it discontinued or not...as long as I could get parts.

I've had one for several years. The only problem I've ever had was the side cover gasket started leaking. Got the gaskets in 1-2 days and no problems since. Deere specs a two gaskets for the side cover now as the chain can rub on the side cover leading to leaks. Mine hadn't broken through yet so I dodged a bullet. Gaskets were around $20 each.

How do the Frontier Tillers stack up against the John Deere series tillers? I was looking at a Frontier Tiller model RT1360 (Heavy Duty rated gear drive, 30-60 HP & 65" cutting width) when I was at the Deere dealer the other day and was told that it listed for about $3500.00 but there was room to haggle. I'm not sure, but as I recall the salesman said that this model was alot more expensive than the previous John Deere brand tillers. He said this was a much heavier built unit than the previous ones in this size range.

I'm going back in a day or so to pick up some hydraulic fluid so I going to check the price again to make sure I heard it right. Anyone heard a price on this tiller (NEW)?
