JD 750 compact trans axle noise

I have a 1985 JD 750 compact tractor with front loader and back hoe that developed a clanking, chattering noise in trans axle when going down hill. Noise diminishes when brakes are applied. Does not make noise on acceleration. The brakes seem okay as tractor will stop when applied. Does this sound like a major trans axle problem or a brake problem? Any advise will be greatly appreciated.
