hey guys. i have a 93 770, looking to get a log splitter to run off the tractor. i dont have a select control valve for the hydraulics. its a all wheel drive unit.
what am i looking to spend for everything (including the hydraulics) and what type of splitters would work on this machine?? thanks

One way would be to install the power beyond
(rear hydraulic) kit on the back of your
tractor, which would allow you to use a splitter
that has it's own valve. that kit number is
BM18005 and is around $220 from JD, takes
a couple hours to install.
If you search TBN there have been quite a few discussions
of different models and prices of splitters...

As Dutch said, the PowerBeyond option is the cheapest and easiest sollution if all you want to operate is a logsplitter.

do they make this for the new 2320?

I assume you mean the PowerBeyond? If so, then yes, it is available for the 2320. You also would use it to power the 46 Backhoe...

Rough figures: $325 for the power beyond kit fully installed $650 for a 3PT logsplitter from TSC, Northern Tool or someplace similar. $100 for some extra long custom hoses with quick disconnects and a couple gallons of hyd fluid.

Plan on making a dolly for it. It will probably weigh 400# or more.

Hi:

Just a recommendation. They are a little bit more $$$ but I got a splitfire
log splitter. (Probably around $1000-$1200) (My dealer charged me a little under $1500 for it and the PBY connection on my 3320. I also plan to use it on my 2305 (I have a PBY connection for a backhoe).

They split in both directions which will avoid you having to wait for the piston pull back cycle. I've used it on my 3320 and it's great, actually pretty hard for 1 person to keep up with it (not at full engine RPM either).

The Flow you'll have on the 2320 isn't a lot so with a single direction splitter you'll probably be spending a lot of time waiting for the piston to cycle back. This unit you just flip around the pieces and cut on the backstroke too.

Interestingly, when I was looking, I could have got a gas powered log splitter for less than the PTO mount one at Home Depot, etc. with a higher hydraulic flow, but none of them were dual direction and I really didn't want another engine to maintain.

One thing after using it I can tell you is absolutely phenominal (all 3pt units, not just the split-fire) that is a non-advertised feature is back strain relief. A standalone splitter you cannot adjust the height so you either have to bend over to use it (Try being bent over all day when your over 40) or reach for it. I'm not talking about lifting the logs, that's over quickly, I'm talking about holding the pieces before you split them, etc. all day long.

With a 3 pt one you can adjust the height so your back is just 'perfect'. - Maybe I'm just getting old. ;)

my $.02

I'll second what orlo said (I have the same setup). I'll also add that I got my splitter with the log lifter which easily lifts several logs at once and doubles as a work table (in the raised position) for holding bigger pieces of wood you may want to split several times. I also got the 4-way knife which in a single stroke splits a piece of wood into four pieces instead of two. You can switch between the 2-way and 4-way knife in about 20 seconds with no tools. It does cost more, but it's a great splitter. I'm not wishing I had something else.

The main thing is to stay with the 3PT concept. The working height of most self contained units is about knee level or slightly higher. There is no way you can work with those and not end up wth a backache or else work while kneeling all day. The 3PT unit will raise up and down to whatever work height you want. You can either buy a model with accessory "shelves" or put an old table next to the I beam and have all your work surface at the right height so you don't kill your back.

Depending upon where the wood may go to from the splitter, it could go sideways directly into a pickup bed, wagon, cart, etc. Moving 10# pieces of wood sideways all day long is sure a lot better than lifting them up again from a low mount splitter.
