I have a JD 790 that I am changing the trans oil and filter and cleaning the strainer. To clean the strainer you remove three bolts on it's cover, remove the strainer, clean and re-install.

The question regarding reinstalling is---do I just slide the strainer back into the transmission case and then put the cap back on OR do I first push the end of the strainer INTO the cap and then slide the assembly back into the trans case? The end of the strainer will fit into the cap.

It's a small point but sometimes these things matter. If anyone has any idea or has cleaned their strainer, please let me know. Probably the same as other Yanmar-built models.

I don't remember which way I did it with mine, but either way will end up with the same results as long as everything lines up.

Was there much crap in it ?

Just some flakes and powdered metal. I boutht this as a TLB 100 hours on it so you never know what to expect.
If someone knows it would be real helpful because I only slid the strainer in and already bolted the cap on without inserting the strainer into the cap.

If anyone has ever cleaned their oil strainer I sure could use a little help on this.

I cleaned mine a couple of days ago.
Put the screen in first. Make sure it goes in all the way. You may have to jiggle it around to get it all the way. About all that should stick out is the flange, then make sure the cover fits over the flange easily (if it doesn't see note and turn it around).

Note, there is a right and wrong direction, but it will only go together one way. The flanges on the ends of the screen are different sizes. I'm 99% sure the big end goes in first and the small fits in the cover.

BTW after you start / stop the tractor, check the filter to make sure it's still properly tightened.

I had to clean mine a few years ago while servicing. My moron dealer had to order parts for the MFWD repairs I was doing. I asked if he had the filter/screen in the parts order. Yes everything is here. When I went to pickup the parts there was a oil filter in the box,??????????? I wanted a transmission screen not oil filter. Duh I don't think we ever sold one of those...

Anyway I cleaned mine with a tooth brush and gas and a magnet to get out the particles of steel from the years of abuse beforeI bought it. I then gave it a quick spray with carb cleaner to remove any residue and a good blow gun cleaning. Looked good as new. As long as yours is not damaged (screen ripped) it should be O.K.

Thanks for this. When you put the filter back into the housing, did you just insert it and then bolt the cover on or did you first stick the end of the strainer into the cover and then install as one unit? How many hours were on yours?

I am pretty sure I pushed the filter in, then bolted the cover on. I had about 800 hours on mine when I did the seals on the MFWD and figured a full service was in order.
