jd 820 3 cyl idles at wide open

for some reason our tractor is idling at WOT on start up and wont slow down
regardless of throttle lever position. its a 1973 model and this is the 1st
time in all that time that something has seriously gone wrong. i see the linkage moving the part on the roosa pump but it doesn't affect the engine speed. any one have a clue on this? thanks

The speed control problem is either the internal linkage or the governor in the pump. Either way the inj pump will require repairs.

Had a similar problem with my JD650. The linkage was evidently gummed up. I hit all the movable joints with WD40 and worked them until they were free to move easily. I think the linkage next to the engine was the worst and were it goes into what ever it was called (side of the engine).

Ditto what TX Jim says. If your linkage is moving the pump lever it's not a linkage problem. If the lever on the pump was NOT moving it could be the foot thottle pedal is stuck down, but from what you describe I doubt it.

The pump lever would move to throttle up but would not return on it's own, it just stayed at the fastest position it was moved to, or close to it.

I agree with these guys, and I did some shopping for injector pump rebuilding on my 820 a few weeks ago as it is starting to leak a little fuel. I recommend you shop around for rebuilding prices, so far they run the gambit between $400 and $750, seems a little high to me, haven't taken the plunge yet.

thanks for the helpful replies, i took the pump off and it seems to be a governor issue, the jd dealer here (kentucky) est. $700 to 1500 to repair, so i have to become an expert on this myself. they have a jd fuel systems manual on ebay for $19.99 which is a reprint of a digital copy. im guess im getting old, i didnt realize the tractor was considered "antique", i still remember the day my grandpa got it.

I hope you set engine to TDC before removing pump.

You need to find an injector pump shop on your own (skip the dealer) to price the rebuild. This is much like finding a starter alternator shop or radiator shop, no point in hving the dealer involved if you can remove and replace the pump. My dealer gave me two shops that they use for these repairs, and said that most dealers sent the pumps out for repairs.






I should add they had two pumps for these tractors a Roosa Master with 2100 rpm for pto speed and a Roto Diesel with 2400 rpm for pto speed. Might make a difference how expensive the repairs are.

in my FMS they list Bosch injection pump, roto diesel injection pump and roosa master model cb injection pump.
