jd 850 pto question--doesn't ease into gear

I was just reading over all the threads....and surprized to see all the comments...Yes the 850 was mfg. with either single stage clutch and dual clutch....The way to check the difference is by serial number or which seat suspension tractor has....The spring suspension has dual clutch and single clutch tractor has two rubber cushion blocks under seat.

Single clutch requires for the clutch to be depressed fully to engage PTO....and to change gears....tractor does have a built in over running PTO.
Transmission is colar-shift....most will grind when changing gears without coming to complete stop...

With the dual clutch....depress clutch fully to engage pto....can push half way down....to change gears without pto stopping.... The double clutches have to be adjusted internaly using specific settings....special tools are required.

I had a John Deere 850, and it was a great little tractor. Here is an excerpt from my TBN Review:
Pros: Very affordable compact utility tractor. Gear shift transmission and slightly larger frame make it a bit dated, but still a great value. Cons: Only one- the PTO clutch is a bit touchy - hard to engage it slowly.

When I would engage the PTO, I would idle it down, Partially and momentarily release the clutch, and then fully release the clutch. That made it less abrupt.
