Does anyone know if the 850 tractor has a live pto or geared to the transmission pto? Don't know the year of the tractor but it has 4wd and power steering, 8speed manual trans, if that helps any.Want to be able to use a tiller, and brush hog with it... thanks

The PTO can be either way. So you may need to ask.
If it has 4 WD and power steering it most likely has the 2 stage clutch/live PTO.
My 2 WD 850 has the single stage clutch and non-live PTO.
For rototilling live PTO is of no help, so it will not matter there.
As far as brush mowing, the 2 stage clutch/live PTO would be better, but I have done brush mowing fields without live PTO on my 850 and got it done just fine.

The 850 and 950 featured a transmission-driven PTO with an over-running clutch. I am pretty sure you had to step up to a 1050 for "LIVE" power. /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif

Some early model 850's had a single stage clutch, most later models had the 2 stage clutch.

That's correct. JD 850 tractors prior to serial no. 09000 and 950 tractors prior to 16000 had a single stage clutch. That was about 1980. Subsequent tractors had a two-stage clutch that would allow you to keep the PTO engaged with the clutch pressed half-way in. There were other changes at that S/N break, including the rockshaft housing and hydraulic plumbing.

Oops. I did not know there was a S/N break. I was looking at the specs for 1979. /forums/images/graemlins/crazy.gif
