In trying to avoid the big bucks on a new tractor I have come across a 4wd 850 that looks pretty good. Can't seem to find out much about the series and tractordata.com shows only 22 pto hp which seems low.

Also found a 1710, one of which we have in the family and I am more familiar with. The numbers look similar, any reason to favor one over the other? Planing on a lot of chipping and raking, light loader work, and no mowing.

Thanks

Hi b33b: not sure if this helps..JOHN DEERE 850 For Sale at TractorHouse.com.. With any used item, condition would be my primary concern. What shape are the tractors in? how many hours? what do fluids, etc. look like? Does it look abused?

You may want to take a serious look at the parts availability on both models. Not what the selling dealer will tell you, but call around for some of the more obscure parts that you might need. I cannot speak to the 1710 model specifically, but I know from an incredible number of calls that the Ford 1600 compact is apparently no longer supported. I also know the volume of calls we have gotten for parts for early JD compacts (50 series and some 70 series) has increased in the past 6 months, and we recently supplied some Yanmar parts to a JD dealer for a 650 because they said the parts were NA now through their parts chain.

In fact those calls have increased so much we have been working on a catalog for early JD compacts, trying to cross the parts we use on our yanmars to various JD units. So far that catalog is 17 pages and a bit over 200 parts. We'll gladly email it to anyone who can take a 500kb file via email...just send an email with the subject line "JD Aftermarket Parts" and request the catalog and we'll send it as a pdf.

Thanks for the replies, hadn't thought of parts not being available. Probably more 1710s around than 850s, plus the local garage owner grew up with 'Blue" and works on them.

Both are clean 2400 lb, 22-24 pto hp tractors with no apparent issues and the 1710 is $1,000 more than the 850. Don't mind the extra bucks if there is a benefit I am missing.

May be down to the 'seat' test but you can get used to the one you got.

The only Ford tractor I've ever owned was an old 8N - and it was a great machine. So I can't comment on pros or cons of your Ford 1710.

I currently have a JD 850 for sale - it's a great machine - never had a lick of problems. Been barn-stored, in great shape, and only 200 hours. Only "problem" (if it's really a problem) is that it's a 2-wheel drive - not 4wd. My local JD Dealer here in Western Colorado has lots of parts available for it. Only reason I'm selling it is because I needed a bigger machine with FEL - so I have a new JD now - and the older JD is no longer needed.

I'm a 'true-blue' guy.. but the jd have a longer production run.. though I'm not sure which unit had more #'s produced.

Both ford and JD were good about supplying aftermarket parts.

The JD unit seems to have been more$$ up front when new.

I'd go on overall age and condition to make this judgement.. etc..

I had checked td.c, does a JD850 really use 19 gallons of hydraulic fluid? Must be fun changing it out.

The 1710 is an '85 with 2,000 hours for $5k and needs a loader which should run in the $3500 range.

The 850 is an '87 with 1,000 hours for $7500. Caught between getting a loader of my choice, with qa bucket, for the 1710 versus the 850's lower hours and ready to work, but needing a QA later.

Time to check them out.
