I am looking at a 1996 JD 855 sn# LV0855E202039, 70A FEL with 54" bucket, HST, and a John Deere 7 back hoe for $10500. The hour meter says 660 but the owner says that it has never worked but the dealer vouched for the hours on it when he bought it (660) the owner says that he only put about 40 hrs on it in the last two years. It is a former rental unit. Is this worth a shot? I am mostly concerned about the transmission since it was a rental but from reading this forum I gather that the transmission on this tractor is bullit proof.

I was recently tractor shopping, and the local JD dealer had three 855's, all with FELs, turf tires, and 60" MMM's, all between 1000 and 1500 hours, and they were between $11500-$12500. I would think you were looking at a decent price, especially with the 'hoe. Maybe some of the experienced JD owners could give you better advice.

nachi1,

As luck would have it I recently purchased a JD 855. Mine came with turf tires, 70A FEL with 60" bucket, and covered ROPS. The previous owner also threw in a small Maschio tiller, a very old - and really ugly - brush hog that does actually work, as well as some "home" cooked implements. Mine is a 1995/1996 with 275 hours on it. It is also a 4 WD HST (all x55 models are HST). My purchase price was $12,000.

I checked it out online and with the low usage and condition it is in - that price was very good.

Mine was used by a Christmas tree farmer which explains the small (narrow) attachments.

You didn't mention if it is 4WD or what area of the country you live in. You might want to update your profile with a little more info as you might get people from your area to respond. Out here (Seattle) the cost of living is very high and tractors are no exception.

As far as using my machine - I am extremely happy with it. So far it seems "bulletproof" as you mention. It starts right up and runs like a dream and has much more power than I expected out of a 24 HP tractor.

I'm not sure I would consider 660 hours a huge amount but many others here might disagree especially based on the fact that you know this machine was a rental.

The price on the one you are looking at seems really low for a unit with a backhoe (I only wish I had one).

If it is in good shape I would jump on it. Good luck
