I have a 1995 JD 855 this is my first winter. When the tractor is first started it smokes terrible, like a white/gray smoke and also had a miss in the engine. At higher idoling speeds it gets worse. As the tractor get warmed up it seems to run better. I have been through the following steps with no success:

1. Drained the tank and put new fuel in and also changed the fuel filter.

2. Checked the injectors by cracking the fuel line at each injector. 2 of the 3 injectors made a difference in the way the tractor would run. The 3rd injector did not make a difference so I had that one rebuilt. After fixing the injector the tractor still runs the same.

3. Swapped the new injector to a different cylinder and the problem stayed with the cylinder.

4. Disconneted the fuel lines from the pump and hand pumped the injector pump as suggested by a dealer to verify no fuel would come out - I was told this would verify the pump was good.

5. Replaced the exhaust valve spring in the cylinder that I believe is the problem - no help. I also checked compression in that cylinder and it has great commpression.

With the weather getting warmer the tractor seems to be running better.

If anyone has any other suggestions they would be much appreciated.

Thanks

Is this machine hard to start , if it is you may have a problem if it starts right up it sounds normal. I have a 790 that does the same thing I tookit to the dealer and they told me it is because of the electronic fuel pump.

From a JD Engine and Fuel System Troubleshooting Chart, here are the possible problems that might cause white exhaust smoke:
1 Fuel pump screen, fuel filter, or fuel line restricted. Fuel dirty, contains water or wrong grade.
2 Air filter elements dirty or plugged, Replace.
3 Injection pump or governor malfunctioning. Injection pump timing incorrect.
4 Fuel pump leaking or not operating. See Fuel Supply Pump Pressure Test.
5 Injector pressure incorrect or leaking.

Other problem/solution combinations are listed in the chart. I tried to scan it for posting as an attachment, but the print looked like it would be too small to read.

The troubleshooting chart I used is found in the JD Series 220 Diesel Engines Component Technical Manual.

SMW,

last summer I brought home a brand new New Holland TC29D. Had two hours on it. The tank was full so I decided I would start right in by doing some brush hogging. I got about a half hour into the project and all of a sudden the RPM's dropped right down to nothing and the tractor started spitting white smoke. I couldn't keep the tractor running. I called the dealer right away and they told me I must have bought some bad fuel. Ah, I said, Im on my first tank of fuel, the fuel that came with the tractor. So they told me to look at the fuel sediiment bowl and sure enough it was full of crud. I got a new filter and dumped out the bowl.

When I started the tractor the white smoke came again but cleared out eventually. But it would also come back while working and a loss of power was evident.

But anyway to make a long story short, we did everything to get the water out of the system. They flused the tank, put a cleaner in the tank, changed the filters. Since then I still get that loss of power and white smoke and rough starts. I have been religiously putting in conditioner with every tank and now finally after 80 hours on the motor it has finally come out of it. It starts right off now, no loss of power and no white smoke. For a while there I was worried.

Eliminating moisture may take a few tanks of conditioned fuel to get it out.

I thought I read out here that some folks mix some ATF into their fuel at intervals to help clean out the injectors. I did a search on ATF and this is the thread I found. Someone was having a problem with puffing at higher Idle. I know it's not exactly the same problem but still sounds like moisture. Let us know what you find out I also have an 855. /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

the old atf in the diesel fuel is a old trick that has been around for years. but it mainly works as a cleaner, not a water remover. if you want to know if your fuel conditioner is going to remove the water. just put some diesel fuel in a clear glass with a little water. the water will seperate from the fuel. when you add the conditioner, you should mix it up a bit. you should no longer be able to see the water in one big puddle.. what it should do is break up the water into real small droplets so it will run threw the engine. i have done this with several types of conditioners. and you would be suprised of the outcome. even the conditioners the dealers say is the best stuff. good luck
