Can any of you large JD machine owners, cowyboydoc, JM3, etc. provide a tour on this JD 9420 panel?

It looks intriguing to say the least.

I can even though I don't own one I have driven them many times at work and have done a few roading trips. The orange lever to the right is your throttle. You just simply slide it forward to increase engine speed. The orange lever on the right is to shift. It is a manual transmission. To use it you select forward or reverse and you will start out in a predefined gear like 7 in forward or 2 in reverse. The operator can program the start gear. You can shift on the go by tapping the lever forward or backwards and to get to highway speed faster you can double tap to skip gears. Then the switches next to those orange levers are for hydraulics. On the big black panel to the back you have fan controls to control the climate of the cab, light switches, the LCD panel to the left is for engine speed, fuel level, coolant temp. The other one is for hydraulics I believe. I have never used that though just the hydraulic levers on the command arm to raise wings of a cultivator. That's basically it. Coyboydoc can give you more info on the technical stuff. This cab layout is used on all JD 8000 and 9000 series tractors with tracks or wheels.

The fingertip hydraulics by the shift lever and throttle control are for the four standard valves. This operates the up and down of them as well as your float position. To the lower right on the panel in the back you control the oil flow to each individual valve. You can control your detent position here as well to no detent, automatic kickout or continuous flow. It just all depends on what you are doing. You can also put these on a timer system for your Greenstar system and your HMS, headland management system. Your depth control is also set here which is similiar but much more advanced than draft control. Everything can be set to preprogramming and also for transportation. There is also a lever just to the back of the fingertip controls that controls the speed of your three point up and down. This is electohydraulically controlled and can be set for depth control, speed, and precise hitch corrections. You can also preset all of this so that it goes to your programmed specs with just the touch of a button and put this into the headland management system as well. Very useful when planting. To the right of that is your data input outlet, cigarette lights or power port. Now just to the left on the panel in the back is your headland management system. This allows you to preset all of the controls to automatically take you back and forth when you come to the end of a field for instance. The swithc on the very top is going to be for your automatic shifting. This will sense when the tractor is lugged down at all and shift automatically to keep the same ground speed or to speeed up or slow down if you're doing GPS farming. The controls to the left of there and above the led display are for the climatrak. This allows you to set the cab comfort to whatever you like so it does it automatically or you can do it manually. On the far left of the panel are the warning lights for everything. Service lights, info lights, hydraulics, engine, etc. Then under the led display is where you can push the buttons to check just about everything. You can turn on diff. lock, 4wd, etc. You can set ground speed, check hours on a job, run service check, run diagnostic check, check temperatures of transmission, hydraulics, etc. , wheel slip, voltage and just about everything else you can think of. That's the basics. it gets way more complicated and I'd be glad to explain something in more detail if you're interested.

...and most importantly, the circular recess at the right center of the picture, approximately 4" in diameter and 3" deep is the libation vessel retention and containment system. This particular model offers the libation vessel manual lift bracket accommodation channel to ensure transport stability of specialized vessels with two to four-finger manual lift brackets. In addition, the libation vessel manual lift bracket channel ensures the proper orientation of the libation vessel manual lift bracket to the operator station. GPS and hydraulic lift libation vessels do require an upgrade kit for the libation vessel containment system. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Richard .. do these mammoths have GPS interfaces? Is that part of the 'headlands" management?

GPS while extremely accurate, has some considerable buffers for tolerances, like a meter or 2 ... Seems like that might be enough to really **** up some acreage. No?

Panels like that had a lot to do with my learning to fly. I LIKE GIZMOS!

Looks like you forgot the most important feature of that LVR there ... the recessed "cleanout" flange.

Cup holders are great, but drives me crazy as they continually need cleaning out!

The GPS, integrated into the Greenstar System, is extremely accurate. My new tractor will be able to drive itself. This will be nice for me as I can get other paperwork, phone calls, etc. done from the office in the tractor while the tractor runs itself. I will be there to keep an eye on things but for the most part it will run itself. I have been looking at it for a couple years now and everyone running it has been extremely impressed. The biggest factor is you can precisely control fertilizer and seeding. This alone has saved guys that farm alot the cost of the new machinery in a year or two. Plus once it's programmed you can also put someone that doesn't know everything in the cab to keep an eye on things.

The headlands management is different. The HMS is for when you have to raise everything up to turn; be it a planter, mower conditioner, disc, chisel plow, fertilizer, etc. You preprogram everything you want and then with the touch of one button it turns everything off and raises it up to turn. Then touch the button again and everything goes back to the preset programs. It can be part of the greenstar system or run on it's own.

In reading through Deere's literature I recall the system chooses the most fuel-efficient gear for the speed you select and load, correct? So in lighter ground you might be turning a lower RPM/higher gear for greater efficiency with the computer doing the choosing?

I grew up running a JD 4230 and I thought the 16-speed quadrange trans was fun! The sophistication of these tractors is amazing. I sure would have liked having HMS.

Yes if you set it to automatic it will pick the most fuel efficient gear to run the tractor in.
