Hello,

I'm helping my neighbor who owns a JD 950. A part broke and we can not get it through a JD dealer as we are told the part is obsolete.

The part is listed on the part schematic page under 850-950 Rockshart Arms and Shaft: Hydraulics and is listed as part #17.

I've included a picture of the part. Any help you can offer in where we can track this down is greatly appreciated.

If you take the old part(s) to a machine shop, they could probably turn that part on a lathe for about the same amount you'd pay John Deere (if you could even get the part). Aside from turning it on a lathe, the only other thing they'd have to do is drill and chamfer that hole where the knob attaches.

When I go into a shop like that, I usually approach them with something like "There's no way in the world you could make a part like this, is there?" That sort of challenges them to show off their ability and shows how delighted I'll be if they can do it.

In your photo it looks like that part is in two pieces with the break near the middle. I can't quite figure out how your part matches parts 17,18,19, and 20 in the parts diagram, but if the tolerances aren't too critical, you might try welding it or having someone weld it for you. I'd grind a taper, almost, but not quite to a point on each part. Then I'd lay the two parts in a piece of angle iron to keep them aligned, and then I'd weld them with a torch. Then I'd grind the weld down afterward to approximate the original shape.

But try the machinist first. That would be a better solution.

At least its a part that is not complicated. Any machine shop could make you another one in about 30 minutes if they have the round bar in stock to use. So at least you can still fix it even though the part has been mothballed.

Thanks for the recommendations. I'll get these to my friend but will continue to monitor this discussion in case anyone else has any thoughts.

I would go to JD parts online and look up the part and number for your tractor, even though it is obsolete. Then I would criss-croos the part to "where used" function to see which models used it. After that you will know which models used that part and will not necessarily have to find a 950 (only) part. Might be a different model with same part number next door and this happens all the time.

Then either find a used one or have a shop make one.
