JD 955 missing rear pto shaft

I think I am going to look at a 955 that doesn't have a rear pto shaft. From the picture it seems to be a well made cover over the opening. Any opinions on what is probably broken inside and maybe what it would cost to fix?

No way to tell from looking at the pic. Have you looked up the diagrams in JD Parts online? If you register you can get parts pricing too.

I looked in the parts catalog online and once you get past the shaft I had a hard time relating the parts to the operation of the pto. I was hoping someone might be familiar with 955's and know what probably broke and maybe what it would cost to fix itl

Hard to tell from that tiny pic. If it is just missing the shaft.... it would be simple fix... after shelling out for the new pto shaft. If any of the other gears, etc., that drive the output shaft, it could be an involved repair and would be costly piecing it together from Deere. Quick estimate would be about $500 to get the shaft, gear, bearings/seals, etc. from Deere. Double that or more if other parts that drive the PTO output shaft are damaged or missing. Best bet would be to find a parts donor.

Engage the PTO and see if it makes any scary noises or maybe, worst case, kills the engine. That should eliminate any Major problems. Can you remove the plate for inspection?

Quiz the seller. He may have a story to tell, may even have broken part(s) to show you.

Are there any tractor salvage yards near you? You could save with used parts. If you can find them.
