Yesterday I installed a power beyond kit on my 955. It consisted of the installation of a couple lines and a diversion plug. The technical bulletin said to take out the plug and install a smaller, shorter plug in its place. Once installed, it said to loc-tite the old threads. I installed the plug, but held off on the loc-tite until after I tested.

Well, when I fired it up to check for leaks, oil shot out of the diversion hole. I checked the plug by pulling it out and putting it back in (no crossthreading. it fit fine) and it looked good.

I then re-installed the original plug with the diversion plug still in place. Fired it up, everything works fine. Rock arms, loader function. I shut it down, pulled apart the power beyond coupling, and could tell it was circulating.

Now the question. The bulletin did not say to discard the old plug, and did not say to install the new plug It just said to loc-tite the threads. The sheet was written in 1996. Could they have gone with a new, shorter plug? Do I need to worry about any damage?

My dealer says all is OK, but I don't know. Any insight would help.

Thanks in advance

Any chance you can post a few pics? I'm not intimate with the 955 (unfortunately), but i'd assume the shorter plug allows the hydraulic flow through a passage it couldn't get to with the original plug in place?

I put the sheet metal back on, but I will pop the fender tonight and see if I can get a pic.

The new diversion plug is only about 1/2 inch long. I put it on the end of a long allen wrench to install. It did not hit threads in the hole until I had it about 2.5 inches in. It caught the threads and screwed in fine.

There has to be at least a half inch gap between the outer plug and the new diversion plug.

Again, I will try on the pictures.

I have done several of these.

There is an outer plug to cap the hole, and you remove that to put the
short (about 1/2" long) power beyond plug inside the hole. There is no
plug inside there to remove first. 2.5" inside the hole sounds a lot deeper
than I remember.

dfkrug,

Did you reinstall the original plug, or discard and seal the threads?

The directions are a little confusing but you supposed to put the outer plug back in and that's the one you loctite. Check out the thread I posted and pics on this project.

Thanks. That's what I needed to know.

All good.

Your tractor is OK if you only ran it for a second like that, just throw some more oil in it to replace what you lost. It sounds like you got the rest of it right enjoy !

Thanks. Did not see your original thread (755 in title, not 955) or I would not have started another. Your directions and photos should replace the Deere service bulletin.

Thanks again!

I reinstalled the original outer plug. KEVINM has it right. I do not have
good photos, unfortunately, as that pre-dates my more intensive digital
photo documentation efforts.

(KEVINM: All your photos come up as only thumbnails, so I can not see
much. It would be great to have somewhere to send folks who ask this
common question.)
