My friend just picked up a 990 4WD with a 300CX bucket and only 95 hours for a song.
Sweet little tractor if you don't mind shifting.

Ok... what's the skinny on his deal? You gotta give us something to chew on...

Well Fish, first, it's a her! She's my friend and next door neighbor who has sheep, horses, lamas, chickens and a donkey on my land. Her friend is moving back to England and she sold her the 990. My friend took over payments. If it was mine I'd be happy to tell what I paid but since it's not I don't think it's fair.
Suffice it to say that it was down at the dealer and I was ready to buy it even with his share which my friend didn't pay.
I like this tractor. It's got a four cylinder engine and it's really smooth compared to my three banger. Also when I looked a the tranny I found that it was all cast iron and no aluminum. Now that's not to say that aluminum is bad but given the choice I'd pick iron on a tractor.
My guess is that Deere stopped making the 990 because they wanted to sell the more expensive 3x20 and 4x20 stuff. They're good machines and the hydro is tough to beat but for a utility tractor with 4WD this guy in great and I highly recommend it.

Actually, the 990 still exists; it was just renamed the 4005.

A little different engine but basically the same machine.
Big difference is you can't get the 4005 with 4WD

The 4005 is available with 4WD. It is just optional. On the JD build web site you have to deselect the incompatible options for it to show up.

Yup.. the 990 is a beast! Very capable and reliable machine.

JD is right. Deere changed the numbering system a few years back and the 990 is the new; 4005. And the tried and true; 790 is the new - 3005.

Both are available in the 4x4 flavor.

Be good to your neighbor - she might let you drive that 990 - once in awhile!

In a county filled with JD tractors she takes the key out at night. She guards it with her life and any day now i expect to see the can of wax come out! It's my own fault, she used to beg on her knees to use mine. What goes around comes around. Talk about egg on your face, the tough part is I really needed it to move some big stumps, she has a tooth bar which I don't!

I do too for some strange reason. I think it's silly since most Deeres use the same key.

I looked hard at the 990/4005 when I wanted a simple, reliable tractor.
