Out dragging chain link on the mower (22hp B&S) when it sounded like it was about to run out of gas. Filled the tank and off I went. Began backfiring and loosing rpms until it quit. IM NOT A MECHANIC so bear with me. Engine turns over and zero spark showing on the plugs. You Tube and I checked the coils and they appear to be good. The 3 safety switches have been disabled and checked. Starting fluid was tried and nothing. 20 amp fuse is good. Has never started easily when cold but quickly when warm. Looking for suggestions, thanks.

Wonder if the crankshaft key for the flywheel sheared?

You can unplug the engine harness and recheck for spark, or better yet remove the kill wire harness from the coils and recheck. It sounds like it could be a flywheel key, but it would still have spark. These have a straight key, so you just have to remove the nut and washer and look down in the slot. If you really do have spark, then pop the valve covers and have a look.

Been away at The University of You Tube and yes you can teach an old dog new tricks. Learned how to test the coils with a meter and found the primary side on BOTH coils reads 0.00 which should explain why there is no spark going to the plug. Now another question.. if one coil goes bad, can that cause damage to the other coil?

Very odd for both to go out like that, but ive seen these engines run on 1 cylinder and no one notices until a large load or drag on engine occurs. Maybe the reason for hard starts was only 1 was working, and the other finally went.

usually replacing mags is not to hard of a chore, and parts are generally cheap. I do this on whole house generators alot. There more complicated, but straight forward enough. Even on a generator, i can remove one plug cable and generator sounds the same running. But only provides anout 1/2 the available kw output.most people dont even know it as they dont generally load these units up much. They just ask why the lights are suddenly dimming when ac starts, but never did that before.

So you could easily take the uncertainty of testing out of the loop by simply removing the harness from the coils and seeing if it fires. If this has compression and hasn't popped, and has some fuel in the cylinders- it should do something if it has spark. The diode harness in between the coils can be damaged and in fact voltage going into the coils can kill them. Common this happens? As stated above, no. Are you confident in how you are checking for spark? Coils are easy enough to change. If you have the old body coils and buy OEM, you may need to trim the cooling fins is the worse case.

Checked compression on both cylinders and 120+. Ohm meter shows 5.22 on the secondary side and 0.00 on the primary side on both coils. In-line spark plug tester shows no spark. Starting fluid produces not a single pop.
