JD735
Hello folks newbie here. My first experience with JD and the yammer diesel motor. I just purchased this F735 wit 920 hours on it with the 60" Commercial Deck Pretty clean appearance wise
Here is my issue. I changed oil but in the 15/40 JD oil as suggested by the rep, I went to cut grass and noticed after about 15 minutes the oil light came on, so pulled it into the shop turned it off and noticed that it dumped a little puddle of oil on the ground. Lifted the cover and noticed the oil coming from a tube which looks like some kind of drain tube as it hangs off the left side as your looking at it from the It comes out and just hangs down below the mower . I already had changed both valve cover rubber gaskets. So I filled it back up with oil about a quart 1/2 and took it out the next day.. same issue for about 15 minutes , oil light comes on and again, dumps a little oil when stopped ,, check oil and its down a quart again. So being new to JD and Yammer motors where do I start.. does it have a PCV valve and if so where. I briefly looked and couldn't locate it.any help would be appreciated. Also a good source for manual as well.
Thanks

Sounds like you have an engine with some serious (hopefully not) problems.

:welcome: to TBN

I'd be getting the service manual quickly and not run the engine anymore until the problem is found.

Oil must be dribbling out pretty constant to lose that much oil in that short of a time. Likely can see the oil trail in the grass even.

Cracked cylinder head or block. You might look again under the valve cover to see if the oil drain-back holes are plugged. Looks like an abuse case. Not typical for this motor. Run it at idle with the valve cover off and observe oil sputtering or streaming. What did you replace the oil filter with ? OEM or auto-parts Mazda filter ?

I would start with checking the engine specs to see how much oil the crankcase should hold. It is not the first time the wrong dipstick is in an engine resulting in an over fill condition which will blow out oil as it is whipped into a foam.
Drain the oil into a clean container and measure it against the spec. and then put the right amount back in and see if the problem continues.

Well bad news, looks like a good deal just went south, looks like one of those you sometimes get taken. So the motor crank bearing was bad and chewed up the lower end so bad cant machine it., so now I have to hunt down a replacement repower motor for this thing. Any leads would be great. I looked on EBAY and they have brand new Yanmer 2V78C for 880 bucks that fit on their 355's , just one digit off on the model number but it looks like it might bolt right in. Anyone have any advice or experience repowering these units. I know a guy has a new vtwin air cooled Vanguard but cost twice as much and would have to buy some kit and do some rigging to get it to work..

Try Small Engine Warehouse. I purchased a Briggs Vanguard repower engine for my 420. Installation was fairly easy. I only had minor issues with the install kit.

But on the downside it is a fairly pricey engine. You might get lucky and be able to find a direct replacment. ( Craigslist, EBay , google search) I would have much rather went back with a oem engine, but couldn't find one in the middle of June, and the grass didn't stop growing to wait on one. Lol.

Wow, if that would fit it'd be a bargain. How about talk to the seller and tell them about what they sold you?

Ouch. I looked at one last year that had the same problem. I considered buying it, I work in a machine shop and we can weld up and remachine anything, but it looked like more work than I wanted. It's a rare motor in the JD/Yanmar world. I was told by my dealer that the 355 and 735 motors were the same. Both are listed as having the 2V78. Not sure what the "c" designates, but I'd buy the eBay motor quick if I was you.
