I am looking at a used 6' JD Flail mower in decent shape. The only numbers I could find on it are F-2200, could that be the model number. The guy actually has two of them, one with a little more rust damage than the other but the other one needs a bearing ***'y on one end of the roller.

He's asking $500.00 for both and before I hand over the cash, I am trying to find some info on it and possibly if I can get an owner's manual. I tried Deere's website but the search turned up nothing similar to F-2200.

Anybody out there know anything about this particular JD mower. It's probably 20-25 years old, shed kept mostly.

tks

where exactly did you find the numbers???

F would be a finish cut rotor
10 millimeters to an inch 2200 millimeters to 86.+ inches
it s not that old and you can buy parts for them
so you have an 7 foot 2 inch mower rotor for cutting width good deal
how many rows of knives does it have?

My dads mower had
had 4 rows of grass knives if I remember correctly.

I would buy them both without question as you can

find manuals on the net or buy them from through a dealer

The serial number plate shoud be on the rotor shroud or under or on the belt gaurd

tks leonz, it has four rows of knives but I don't think it's 7'+ wide, I didn't measure it but looks like 6 feet. I'll try to find the serial number.

I wish I could afford both of them but I can't right now.

Whoopsie; as in he wants 1,000.00 USD for the pair?

I am pretty sure its a 7+ footer as we barely got ours through the 8 foot overhead door with

the housing and roller width taken into accout-makes the physical width larger due to the side weldments

on the shroud which connect the ends of the rear roller.

Either way you will have a good mower for all conditions I would write him a check quickly,

and include a deposit on the other one so it does not stray as they are money in the bank for you.

Oh and by the way wayne, you will not need a bush hog when you get the first on home.

we use our 48" finish rotor with staggered knives to cut everything down to carpet.

The knives are still available- do you remeber if they are tapered grass slicer knive or flat edged?

leonz, the knives were kinda flat-edged on thr cutting edge and with like curled side edges,. There are 4 staggered row of 13 knives.

It sounds as if they are either "cup knives" or grass side slicers with long cutting edges.

Are the knives secured with a shackle or a bolt and nut?

Th side slicer knives are in two size lengths and thats ok and no issue as you will be able to buy the knives for both of them from these vendors as well as John Deere if you want to buy from a local dealer-but volume purchases wil save you a lot of money if you buy two sets.

Clean Cutter Tiller Blades
Flail-Master - Mower Replacement Parts, Commercial Riding Mower Parts, Rotary Cutter Parts, Blade grinders, Trimmer Line, Mowing Accessories - Flail Master - Flailmaster -
Wasco Hardfacing Company Inc, tillage tools, cultivating equipment distributors, manufacturers

These 2 mowers you looked at have the "side sliver knives" and are easily obtainable from the firms mentioned above.

You wil have to decide if you want a hardfaced slicer knive or not when you buy replacements..

There are two lengths of grass slicer knives for these machines to decied on which length of grass and brush you want to leave after mowing.

leonz, you were entirely right, it is a seven footer, even the owner was surprissed as he had it advertized as a six footer. It had a bad bearing and he agreed to replace it and went to the JD dealer for the part and that's when he fould out it is a 7'. All this equipment belonged to his dad who farmed 2000 acres and so he's selling off a lot of stuff out of the estate settlement.

I wish I had more spare money right now. Anyway, it looks like I can get pretty good service out of the existing knives although it is missing a few.The knives are bolted on and looks like a 5/16", possible 3/8'' bolt/nut. There is some surface rust but no holes or broken welds. I'm gonna clean it up, repaint it and hopefully get many years of service out of it.

I cannot make out the serial number as it's partly missing but there's a three digit decal on the middle shroud that looks like "25A". I wonder what a new or slightly new model like this would cost?

tks for all your help.

The 25A is the model No., evn with a partial number the dealer will be able at least track its build date as it either has an ID that states the order number or the calendar date in some cases dependent upon the demand for that size flail mower; I am unsure about current pricing but it would tell you on the JD web page I am sure when you went to build and price one.

Be sure to get spare knives to at least replace the damaged or broken ones to maintain rotor balance and buy in bulk when you want to change them.

BE sure to tell the owner when he replaces the bearing to fill the bearing with grease and not blow the seals when he pumps in grease- the grease should be barely seen coming out of the bearing outboard seal

You should invest in a Wen wet well grinder to sharpen the blades during the off season or when you have more time as it wil put a great edge on the knives for you and not over heat the edges. A table belt sander works but the edge is not sharp.

Be sure to buy new V belts and replace the old ones.
If you wanted to you could remove the new belts and put them in a sealed garbage bag till next mowing season to reduce the drying out of the V belts and ozone damage to the belts as well.

Happy mowing

The 25A is a current model and the base unit lists for about $4800. I bought a used one a couple of months ago. Mine has three rows of twelve "cup" type blades. I received a few extra, new JD blades and a drive belt with mine.

I also bought additional blades, hangers and links (terminology ?) from Flailmaster (Flail-Master - Mower Replacement Parts, Commercial Riding Mower Parts, Rotary Cutter Parts, Blade grinders, Trimmer Line, Mowing Accessories - Flail Master - Flailmaster -). The only difference I can see between the JD and Flailmaster blades is the JD's are painted green and the Flailmaster's cost about half as much, plus orders of over $100 get free shipping by UPS. Very easy people to deal with: called them one morning had the parts the next day.

I am very happy with mine so far. Have only cut about five acres so far. It does a good job on heavy grass & weeds and seems to handle small (1") bushes ok. Larger bushes don't seem to hurt the mower but it basicaly just strips some leaves and limbs but doesn't cut the trunk. Good luck!

Dumb question but I was raised around mules, not tractors. I am going to use this mower for the first time friday on a two acre field adjacent to my house. When using this implement, is it like a harrow in that when you get to the end of the field, you need to lift it up to turn around? If so, then is there any manueverability around curves?

It is pretty much like any other mower: there is generally no need to lift it for turns. If your are making a backing-turn then be careful not to push the rear shield agaisnt someting that could bend it.
Also, if you have the mower tilted way back and have the optional rubber skirt on the rear shield - the shield can drag the ground and cause possible damage. When I first tried my 25A, the rear roller was set for the shortest cut possible and it does have the optional rear skirt. I was cutting an old pasture and just tilted the mower back so that I was cutting about 4" high. I backed up with mower down and the skirt drug hard enough to put a slight bend in the metal support housing. I have since adjusted the roller for the cut I want and can backup with no issue.

Herd, my flail is a Ford, but I leave it down when I turn unless in a dip that might catch the sides/edge of mower.
