Anyone that can help me. . .my husband used to take care of all these things, he now has dementia and I'm trying to learn.

Lawn tractors are foreign to me but it starts (have to charge battery), I engage the deck, cut for anywhere from 5 t 15 minutes and the deck quits turning. Engine still runs, but no blades turn.

Any suggestions? Someone told me that if the battery isn't fulling charging this will happen??? Make any sense to anyone?

Thanks so much, I'm really trying and we don't have the money and I can't haul it in anywhere and I have 2.5 acres to cut.

Thank you,
Dee

If the battery isn't being charged, you are charging up the battery to start it, which the electric clutch runs off of until it gets runs down, and below about 10 volts the clutch can no longer stay engaged, but you don't have to have any power to run the motor, or above 9 volts to run the fuel solenoid on the carb, if it has one. You will need to get the charging system fixed for the clutch to work correctly.

Try asking a neighbor that has a tractor to help. Tell them the advice that you received here.
Many good folks out there can really help in time of need. Just ask!

If the battery is two to three years old, it's probably shot. Take it to the NAPA down on main street, they should be able to test it. A weak / bad battery may take enough charge to get started, but not be able to hold a charge very long and keep that blade clutch engaged. My mom had the same thing (she's holding down the fort now too :( ) happen on hers this spring.

EDIT: Unhook the Black (-) wire from the battery first, and hook it back up last when putting the battery back on the tractor.

If it's a JD strong box battery, I have had four of them just give out with out any warning. Went with interstate batteries and all is well.

no one to go
Good folks here always willing to help as much as they can.

I recommend testing the old battery before buying new. Should be a no charge service at NAPA.

Dad ran the milk route through Deckerville, Ubly, Bad Axe,... always got to ride along with him on school snow days, which didn't happen often, but when they did there was SNOW! Cars used to wait at the end of their driveway for the milk truck to go through then follow it's tracks to get out.

The battery is one possibility. The electrical connections could need cleaning. The PTO switch could be bad. The PTO could need adjustment.
