bx2200..jd 2010 loader backhoe tractor
so i need a rod seal for a bucket tilt on a 541 loader..so i figure its gonna be pricey but it really wasnt.
so i buy the kit and take the cyl off.
now keep in mind that the cyl requires 2 kits. one for the rod end..one for the piston end.

so heres the kicker...ya need a special pos plastic tool to release the head from the cyl bore. theres a ring inside the bore that the tool will help to release the ring holding the rod end in.

the problem here and how they bone ya is that i only need to do the rod seal...but i need to buy the kit for the piston to get the tool to get the head out . 2 seperate kits....

well the dope at the parts counter didnt know the tool is in the piston kit and that you need it to take the cyl apart even if you dont need to chage the piswton seals..only the rod seal and wiper.

the rod seal end is 36 bucks and the piston kit with the tool is 25 bucks...

are ya gettin me here...how much money they are making just with this pkg change, besides the fact i had to make 2 trips cuz the parts cntr dumbass didnt know the deal on the kits.i mean...its only his job right
if yer gonna bone me jsut make it one kit for 75 bucks and ill throw away what i dont need. nobody is gonna do the rebuild w/o reasealing the rod seal and wiper but alotta home mechs will just do the rod to save a few bucks to keep il off his hay bales right?

wtf john deere,,,thats wrong no matter how ya slice that poop

Here's where Deere having a huge parts supply hurts "you" I've run into this before. The rebuild is two kits because the rod and cylinder are used in different applications. The same cylinder size is used with different rod diameters. Ergo two kits for your cylinder. Besides, you have to remove the piston seal to install the rod seal with some rods.

yeah..its as if they figured it out and now they can sell em both...even tho ya really only need one

I would not blame/name call the parts man. He did not write the parts catalog. He most likely never took a cylinder apart. It may have been the first he sold.

JD could have done a better job, by either a note (in the parts catalog) with each seal kit stating also to buy xxxxxxx part number for disassembly, or include the tool in each kit (increasing the cost to do a cylinder). As hosspuller stated most would do everything since they have to take it apart, so would buy both kits.

Were you able to determine the part number of the tool? Posting that would help the next guy that only wants to reseal the rod.

Another way to do it is use "bondo" to fill the groove. Either leave the groove oily or clean and use a release agent before using "bondo". After it hardens take the cylinder apart, then chip out the "bondo"

ill post up the tool number if it has one..its a small plastic ring..it would not raise the cost to include it in all the kits..mayb pennies really. the bondo idea isnt too bad but alotta troubles. it was 25$ more for the whole deal. i guess the 2 trips and taking it apart to do it twice is waht burned me on it. the parts guy said he didnt know but comon man...its his job and hes been there since god settled florida

I agree that plastic ring likely cost mere pennies. I'll bet JD will want north of $10 for one.
Can you tell from JD parts web site the part number?
I can post a drawing if you need one.

#17 is an O-Ring. Maybe #19 or #21?

yeah its gotta be 19 cuz its the split ring..none of the other parts are a split piece.

once ya use it thats it. i guess it would help going in also but when ya yank that retaining ring and the piston over it thats pretty much the end of it. i used it going in but probly shouldnt have. i think it shaved some of it off into the bore..hopefully into the filter..small pieces can wreak havoc
