Actually, they are all going that route, especially with the T4 and now the T5 units. The more complex they get, the more chance of failure.

I'm sorry, I don't buy that argument at all. I don't mean to sound like I am defending the EPA, but John Deere's motives are behind their right to repair position has far more to do with trying to monopolize the repair of their machines. Emissions are a small fraction of the things they would like to prevent the owner from touching.

I'm with you. There's no reason a scan tool for diagnostic purposes or to reset a maintenance interval counter needs to have the ability to tweak with emissions settings.
I know tier 4 is a touchy subject here, but it's the law. That shouldn't prevent an owner from being able to do their own repairs. In this regard farm equipment shouldn't be any different than on-road vehicles.

While I believe the EPA was founded with good intentions, like most bureaucracies it has way overstepped its bounds.

You may be right. I'd like to think that both started out with higher motives - JD to make farming more efficient and the EPA to improve people's health & life.

But if so, they've both changed to concentrate more on the mundane. More on profits and power and less on being a benefit to the society that created them.

Profit is easier to accomplish than being beneficial, so it's not hard to see the attraction.
