Just wondering if $1600 is a good deal for a new John Deere 665 Heavy duty tiller?

Yes, it is a good price. I have the 647 (4 ft) and it was $1799. It has been a great addition to my arsenal. If it's still available, go for it

I did get the tiller. The dealer was selling it on consignment for a guy that purchased it and then had to move so he never used it. The only drawbck is that there is no warranty but I'm not to worried about that. The dealer put it on a tractor and ran it. Everything worked fine.
I'm very happy to get a JD tiller at that price. Thought I was going to have to go with one of the cheaper off brands. That would have been ok but I'm more confident in this tiller taking some serious abuse.

JD makes very few of its own implements so you are happy to pay more for the green off brand?

They may not make a lot of there own products but JD seems to make sure they are very high quality. I don't know if I would have bought a JD tiller new. However, I researched quite a few other brands of tillers and to get one that is comperable to the JD you will pay about the same price. Sure there are some that are cheaper but they do not look like they will hold up like the JD or the other brands that are compareable in price.

Havotec,

I would agree with you about Deere equipment; I know we tend to pay a premium for their machines and attachments, but from my past and current experience, I think each time it was well worth it. Let us know how the tiller works! /forums/images/graemlins/cool.gif

I got a Frontier RT1150 50" tiller as part of my package deal. Seems like a tough enough piece to me and I have abused it already believe me. At about the same price you got a JD tiller, helluva deal!

I would say you have the off brands....

Don't let anyone tell you Deere is a "off Brand ". They are just ill-informed anti-greenies ! /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif Howard makes the JD Tillers to their spec and as far as I have seen thats as good as it gets. I especially like to see those kind of negative JD comments from people who really do own and even sell the cheap junk. The very fact that they respond in a negative light tells you just how good of a deal you got ! I have a Frontier tiller that was over 2k. Hey I got a killer price on the tractor and FEL so paying top price on the tiller didn't bother me at all. I'm sure the full price on your $1600 tiller was about $800 more. Congrats on a great buy. If it's even half as tuff as the Frontier model I'll bet it will outlive you and all the cheap tiller dealers combined. /forums/images/graemlins/cool.gif

I have a jd Howard Tiller And a befco. The Beefco is much better. Much tougher. Tilled thousands of gardens and no parts replaced. Howard has done much less and replaced many parts.
