Several months ago( maybe a year) someone posted about a JD add-on grill guard and hood protecter for working in the woods and /or with a loader. I remember him saying it was buried on the JD Web site and he had a link. I thought he called it "tractor armor" I've searched the JD Web site but come up blank. Can the TBN braintrust, yet again, help me?

Ray,
I think the thread you're thinking of may be <A target="_blank" HREF=http://www.tractorbynet.com/cgi-bin/compact/showflat.pl?Cat=&Board=jdown&Number=39899&page=&view=&sb=&o=&vc=1>this one</A>. Good luck trying to find the hood armor on the J.D. site. I've never been able to find it even though the extra armor package shows it.

RCH, last fall i got the "JD Xtra Armor Kit" for my 4400. The dealer tried charging me extra for the cutting edge for the bucket, and the guard for the mid-point hydralics which you see are included in Mikes attachment. WARNING! Mid-point hydralics guard DOES NOT work if you install the 6-ply 7-16" r-1 front tires! After coming out to install the guard, i started up my tractor and pulled out of the barn and made a right turn........ only to have the front end jump then dive scaring me half to death! i immediatly shut down the tractor and did a "walk around" and found the front right wheel had drove itself under the guard with the weight of the tractor on top! If i had turned the wheel to the right further than i had i would have torn the tire of the rim or even the entire wheel off the tractor! Called the dealer and they sent out their sv mngr who pulled off the guard three times to rebuild so it would fit proper! As for the kit in general, i like it although a skid-plate covering the entire bottom of the tractor would be nice........i spent the first 8 hrs running an MX-5 rotary cutter, brushing NEW trail thru the woods and running over trees as thick as my wrist the guards seem to be doing their job.................. mark

Randy, Mike, Mark; you guys are great. That is exactly what I was looking for.
Mark, do you have any cost figures ? What exactly is included ? Would a 4 n 1 bucket complicate things (is that what you mean about a mid mounted hydraulic ?) Re your comments about a skid plate, what do you recommend ? Does this interfere with access to the engine, checking the battery, radiator, cleaning debri off the radiator etc. Please elaborate about the 6 ply tires hanging -up and what is the fix, if there is one? Would a 4300 have the same concerns ?

Hey Ray, sorry i didn't get back sooner. The cost for the entire kit was $615.00. Everything that was included was in the down-load i got off of the JD websight. The dealer didn't want to include everything you see.( he tried charging me cutting edge for bucket, warning light brush guards, and tried to tell me that the mid point hyd. guard was not included.....also extra) He didn't appreciate me confronting him with the print out from JD. Seems his dealers book had differant info. As for the skid plate, thats something one would have to mfgr one self. I haven't really looked to closely at it yet. The only way to keep away from the 6-ply tire/mid-point guard conflict is to either not get the tires or not get the guard... or...do what we had to do, and that means remanufacturing the guard so there is no conflict.... 4300 would have the same concerns because the only real differance with the 4400 and 4300 is a couple of hp. will try to send some pics.......... hope this helps.................mark

MarkinMN, thanks re photos. Now I understand about the big tires and hydraulic coupling. What about accessing engine compartment?

   / JD tractor armor #12
Hey Ray, Getting access to engine compartment is a snap! The hood/brush guard, is mounted by 4 pins in front. To open it, just remove the top 2 pins (pull the hitch-pin clips first) and lift and swing, forward the guard up,over and down and let it rest on the loader horizontal member the bottom pins act as hinges.................hope this helps...........mark
