Well my wife just spent a couple of hours on our newish (20hrs) JD X495 cutting 5-6 inch tall grass (not lush) and came in saying the blades had stopped. I went out and checked the machine to find the temp gauge in the red.

I switched it off, let it cool down and checked all the obvious, the oil, the coolant level and under the deck to see if there was something jamming....... everthing was fine. I started the machine up and engaged the blades and all worked fine, I checked to see if the radiator fan was working and it was.

It has been quite a warm day here with the temp around 88F but that should not have caused a problem. I'm a bit worried about what damage that may have been done!

I'll ring the JD dealer on Monday but before I do, has anyone got any thoughts on what the problem may have been to cause the blades to stop and the temp to go into the red?

First off congratulations on your new tractor they are a incredible mowing machine. Now no big deal about the heat - open the hood and undo the small ring fasteners on the left side (they are right behind the rad) . They are cadmium plated. Ther should be 4 of them. Turn them so they are in line with the notch in the cover screen . Next pull the covered screen off . With the black covered screen off you will see a thin vertical screen with about a 2"45degree flange on the top. Now undo the fastener for it and pull towards you and clean off or vacuum. Before you put back go to the other side and depress the parking brake pedal and engage and pull the black covered screen off to same way line up the fasteners with the openings in the screen and pul it off . it should come off more vertically up than straight away from the tractor. With both screens off blow all the crap out front and back of the rad and don't be afraid to blow air thru the rad. This will cure your overheating i hope. while you are there give your engine a good blowinf off too. Reinsert your right screen and return the fasteners to the flat position and go to the left and put the vertical screen in. There is a groove for it at the top. Close the fasteners for it and put the big black screen back on and you are good to go. Put her to work Bye. Have a good day . By the way how's the weather there today Saturday November 11 Rememberence day. Its going to be a high of 7 degrees C here today up here in Southwestern Ontario Canada.

Thanks I'll give it a go tomorrow morning.............fingers crossed that no damage has been done. Yes it is a great machine, my wife actually told me she wanted to cut the front paddock today as she also likes the X495! I managed last autumn to get one of the last imported to Australia at a good price, so far I've been very happy with it.

Remembrance day here was a beautiful early summer blue sky day with top temps around 29C (about 88F). Perfect!
