John Deere 2520
Hello All,

My father has a JD X585. For those of you who own one you know that this tractor is equiped from JD with RIO (Reverse Implement Option). He has been using this tractor now for two years, year round for mowing and snow throwing.

His question is can the RIO function be disabled? He hates that every time he gets off of the seat and forgets to engage the parking brake even without the PTO on, the tractor still shuts off.

When he mows, every time he backs up and if he forgets to pull up on the RIO lever, the mower will shut down. Same result with snowthrowing.

His question is does anyone know of a RIO work around so that he does not have to pull up on the RIO lever to backup with the implent (in his case mower deck or snowthrower) engaged.

He understands that this will reduce safety, but after talking to me about my 2520, he would prefer it to function as such, by only shutting down the tractor if you leave the seat with the mid PTO running. You can backup and leave the seat without those added inconveniences.

Thanks for all who reply.

I told him a quick fix was a 2320...

Larry, the RIO system has nothing to do with the tractor shutting off when you get up off the seat - that's another safety system, one which I would not really recommend disabling. Does your Dad really think it makes sense to get off a running tractor without the parking brake engaged? I am not a safety fanatic by any means, but that sounds scary.

Regarding disabling the RIO system itself, it is a sad fact of modern American life that anyone who tells you how to do it might find themselves liable for any subsequent accidents, so you're on your own - sorry.

Larry:

The seat switch can just be jumped (with an electrical staple in the harness) - Unplug it from the seat, etc. I wouldn't recommend it either. I do that on my 2305 to run rear implements (Splitter/chipper) while off the seat.

And anything can be jumped - I'm sure you can jump the reverse switch - It's just either a normally open (Like the seat switch when your off of it), or a normally closed switch.

Again disabling safety features isn't always a good idea.

On another note, I have found if a little funny, that since they instituted the "mow in reverse" lockouts on most mowers that Cut's, etc. Even those targeted at folks doing a lot of mowing (like the 2305) don't have a feature. - I'm not complaining as I had a GT5000 craftsman that had the same thing and drove me crazy. But on that I could select a position on the ignition and it would stay engaged through forward/reverse shifts so I didn't have to do it every time.

I've heard that tabs that contact the reverse linkage can get accidently bent causing other options to not function.

I had the problem of the RIO not even working on my X7##, neither were the back-up lights. I felt it was unsafe. When I looked under the machine, that reverse sensing switch which was supposed to be bolted to the frame with two very small nuts and bolts, had been unbolted and tied up tucked up inside the frame. I put it back into position, but found that when I just unplugged it to make it easier to reinstall, the tractor wouldn't start or run. Long story short, I now have my safe RIO. My back-up lights will work when I step on the reverse pedal too.

I was told that a golf tee fits perfectly under the RIO lever and keeps it in the "up" position. Never tried it (I got used to using the lever), but it seems logical.

Golf tees, clothes pins and Bic pen caps all work when wedged beneath the pto switch. Just remember that if you need to shut down the pto quickly to step on the brake pedal. The back up lights will work with this method too. I keep a pen cap in the glove box so I can choose to use it or not depending on the conditions at hand.
