hopefully the problem is solved..apparently, the gas was going by the threads of the seat and thru a very small groove in the casting that was under the gasket of the seat; i put a neoprene O-ring under the gasket this wk-end; and it solved the problem...i "assume" the gasket material was to hard to go into the small groove, but the O-ring worked like a champ..

sorry to raise this one again; but the flooding problem is not solved; it happened again Jan 1; gas running out of the carb, after shut-off; i have installed 3 needle valves and seats; from a local auto parts store that also sells tractor parts; my next attempt is a JD needle and seat...
or a used carb if i can locate one.

HeeHaw, check for a non-floating float. That could also cause flooding. Good luck.

did that; right now i have the screws on the top of the carb loose, so i can see the float, and know it has the needle valve pushed into the seat; i am going to hook an electric fuel pump to it tomorrow and see if gas goes into the bowl.

heehaw,
I know very little about a JD1020 carb, but I was wonder does it have a diaphragm which might be worn or a hole in it which is letting your fuel pass by.

heehaw, is there rust/dirt in the tank intermittantly interfering with the needle seating?. A slug of lacquer thinner some times will cut the varnish residue from old gasoline that has dried up.

i've had the carb cleaned; and have a fuel filter on the line from the tank to the fuel pump; but that is an area i haven't thought about; i will add a new filter from the pump to the carb. i really appreciate your suggestions..
the carb is an up-draft type; no moving parts except the float, and it is brass, and floats fine; the carb is mounted at @ the same height as the middle of the gas tank; if the tank is full; with the engine shut off, the carb will overflow (takes a day or so); once the level of the gas is lower than the carb, it stops. i went to the local JD dealer yesterday and talked to the shop foreman; told him what it was doing; his answer was "it needs a kit in it": so i asked what the kit had in it that would stop the gas flow other than a needle valve and seat; "it needs a kit in it" was the reply again, oh well..the kit is $42; the needle valve and seat is $22 from JD; from the auto parts store its @ $6.50, and they "appear" the same except for cosmetics on the seat.
after i hook up the electric fuel pump, i have it rigged so i can put pressure on the needle valve with a thin screwdriver, i will be able to get a better idea of where the fuel is coming in. if it's going past the needle valve, i'll put a JD set in it.

I used to have a 5-gallon pail of carb/parts cleaner with a basket I bought at a NAPA store. Sure did a good job of cleaning things up. Fixed up a few carbs too.

If it's an intermittent problem, I'd suspect dirt or residue. However, checking the float level is one thing I haven't heard mentioned--float levels are often checked with a twist drill and adjusted by bending the float arms. A manual should provide specs.

ok; i hooked up the electric fuel pump to the carb, and could still see gas flowing into the bowl, even after i put pressure on the needle valve with a thin screwdriver; so i took the bowl off, and turned the top part of the carb upside down, which put the weight of the float on the needle valve; turned on the electric fuel pump and a very slight amount of gas was coming up around the threads of the seat. the seat has a hard phonelic like washer under the lip, and gas was coming out between the two; i unscrewed the seat, again, and this time put @4 or 5 wraps of teflon tape around the threads( sure hope it works in gasoline), and put the seat back in; no leaks this time, used the tractor for @ an hour with no problems, i sure have my fingers crossed.. when i had put the neoprene O-ring under the lip of the seat before, it would probably have worked, except i put the hard phonelic type washer on too, and it "appears" the gas comes out between that hard washer and the seat..
