I was operating on an asphalt road the other day when my 1070 started making a God aweful sound like the tranmission just blew up. I stopped the tractor and found I could still move. I drove the unit back to the house and started looking. Here the shield that covers the driveshaft (going to the front axle) had come loose in the front. When I got a close look at it I saw the shield had a like new decal on it with the part number. This made me think it's happened before. I just bought the tractor in June. All that broke was the tab on the front of the shield that secures it to the front axle.

Anyone know what would cause the thing to break? Are they a pain to change if I can't get the tab welded back on?

I don't have first hand knowledge on the 1070 but, if the tab broke off the shield, the shield is getting enough vibration to flex the tab until it breaks.

Is there any way to add more support at a different place on the shield?

I was able to get the thing apart. A good friend of mine was able to weld the tab back on with an argon welder. Getting the driveshaft back on was a different story. Each end has a joint with 6 ball bearings. Of course they fell out when I took it apart. It took quite a bit but I was finally got it back together.

Looking back I was thinking I shouldn't have been it 4x4 on an asphalt road. On top of that I was coming down a steep hill. That may have caused some issues. Especially on a unit with over 5000 hours.

Definitely not! That can really do series damage!
