JD112L How to check trans fluid, type of fluid etc.

Hi folks.
I have this new to me but used riding mower and need to check the fluids.

It has a peerless tagged hydro tranny with the vented filler cap under the seat. How do I check the fluid level, what fluid do I top it up with, and is there any maintenance involved with this trans? The little cooling fan was blowing on a messy trans case until I cleaned off and found the fins today.

The engine is a kawasaki that smokes a little and the mower is an older one.

Well turns out that the 112L is the same as a 111 or 111H except a different engine so if anyone knows about maintenance on these machines please speak up. I do believe that the "full" mark on the tranny is 5.5" below the top of the filler neck but not sure of fluid seems to be a hydraulic/trans oil and not atf.
