Hey folks. Just moved to the country and picked up my first tractor. I have a very rough cleared area of grass/hay that may have been used for farming in the past by previous owner. I currently just mow the grass there every 2-3 weeks. The ground is VERY rough in some places and makes for slow mowing with the JD2025. I have considered running my JD655 (55 inch) tiller over the area and trying to flatten out the high/low spots and then just seeding with grass for next season. The area is approx. 105 feet by 65 feet. Does anyone have any practical experience running a tiller (JD 655) over an area of that size? Is that too much ground to attempt with this tractor tiller combo? I did a 24'x40' foot garden bed this spring and that took literally no time at all. I'm wondering how the equipment will hold up over a larger area.

Really appreciate any input.

Brian

The equipment will do it no problem. I have a 58" tiller and have done acres at a time. Do you have some way to even it all out once it's tilled?

That's a great question.. Was thinking roller but that would defeat the purpose of tilling, wouldn't it? What would you recommend? Raking?

By hand? Actually I think that you do want to roll it, but not until you have it smoothed out. What do you have? Don't really want to buy anything just for this. Or maybe you do, looking for a reason to get another implement?

Till it, pull a harrow (chain link fence, old bed springs, etc.), seed it, roll it.

I have also done acres at a time. This is what they are made for. Should be no problem at all.

My best results come from seeding, then pulling my 4X4' drag tine harrows over it to help the seed make contact and to cover the seed enough that the birds don't get it all. If you could roll it too after that, then that would be even more ideal, but I've never had access to a roller.

The 2025R tractor and 655 tiller are a perfect match. You can till all day long with it if you want, and never hurt them. For leveling the ground, make 3 passes with the tiller. Travel north/south the first time you till the ground, then travel east/west and finally north/south again for the third pass. If you go the same direction all the time, it won't level its self out nearly as well. After that, I use a section of a spike harrow to finish leveling and compress some of the "fluffy" soil down a little. Spread the seed while it is still a little fluffy and then harrow again. Roll it if you have a roller.

I agree with bigtiller, the tiller will level it out a lot and going in different directions will help. I have done that with my KK and it works well. Ed

Run the tiller at 1000 rpm pto and drag a railroad tie behind it.

Run the tiller at 1000 rpm pto and drag a railroad tie behind it.

That's basically at an idle for a 2520r. I would give it more throttle than that just getting it out of the shed. Any pto work done with these small tractors should be done with a WOT (wide open throttle).
