I feel confident I can take the cylinder off the tractor. I assume there is some type of seal or gasket that needs to be replaced. Since it is hydraulics, and not specific to the tractor, are there shops that would do the work of dismantling and replacing the worn parts? Or should I be looking to go through the process of dismantling it myself?

I can handle basic mechanical work, but a hydraulic cylinder is foreign territory to me. I have replaced hoses, and even dismantled and repaired the linkage to the hydraulic pump, but that is about as far as I have gone so far.

I have a hydraulic wood splitter and I had read that people took their cylinder to a shop to have it refurbished. I'm just not sure what sort of shop I would be looking for that would do this work. Just point me in the right general direction.

Not sure, without your location in your profile, where you are at. Yellow pages would be a place to start if not wanting to poke around yourself. But the task shouldn't be daunting, if you know what parts are inside and if there is a snap ring or wire holding it together.
Which JD 400 do you have? The backhoe? crawler? tractor? What year?

Might try looking it up in jdparts.com and see if you can match up the cylinder for a breakdown of internal parts.

OK, I updated my profile. Sorry I didn't notice when I signed up initially. Stow, MA

1969 John Deere JD400, the standard build with Front Loader and Backhoe.

I have a full service manual, so it does a great job of breaking things down. The issue is that they stopped making most of the original parts in the early 70s, so part numbers often don't do much good. However, most times things can be repaired or replaced with a similar item. Hydraulics haven't changed that much so I figured a modern hydraulics place could handle it. I'm sure this isn't the first time it has leaked and been fixed. I did a quick web search. There are a few places in the area that I can likely take it to. Perhaps I can try to pull it apart and see what makes it tick, then I can always take it to a shop if I get too stumped.

See if you can find it on jdparts.com (free registration) and I saw a couple different schematics showing the inside parts, but can't determine which look like the ones you have that are leaking.

On jdparts.com, just type in the model no. "400" and pick from that listing.. then go to alphabetical "C" for cylinders and choose the ones that look like yours.

All they have is bucket teeth. Nothing else is listed for parts. However, they also had a search by picture and that search engine had a parts catalog PDF.

Page 34 looks like mine.

Not to mention, almost everywhere the model is referred to as a John Deere JD400. It is rare that it is ever called a "400".

Guess you got onto the wrong track somewhere.
If you go to jdparts.com, then entering 400 in the model search box, this list comes up.
And you are correct that in that list (arrow) it is JD400. Click that and much more than bucket teeth show up. ;)

It's the second one, Loader. Under "C", Cylinder Boom Lift.

Are there standard parts, like a rebuild kit, one would normally replace for a leaking cylinder?

Given the age, chasing down the correct part number is a challenge. As the original part numbers (kit included) is no longer made, but there are newer part numbers available that replace the previous ones. I had no luck with the number listed on JDParts, but when I referenced a part number that it was replacing, then I found some hits. I finally bumped into a site called "tornadoparts.com" which seem to have coverage for a large range of models. I didn't find my model, but each part lists all the compatible models and mine would often be referenced in that list. The odd thing is the part number "RE19220". Any clue where these new part numbers came from? Is there a good website, resource that shows what these parts are replacing? I suppose I'm looking for a cross index of some sort. Searching for RE19220 comes up with plenty of results. Amazon even carried it at one time. Had I known that part number to start with, this would have gone a lot quicker. I'm guessing some supplier/MFG re-cataloged all these parts with their new numbering system. Now to just figure out how to tie those back to the parts I'm trying to find.

Another question. Since I'm going to order that kit, should I just get two in anticipation of needing to work on the other cylinder? I'm not sure if it is like batteries or tires, where you should replace them at the same time.
